The second major championship of the season is here … and already Rory McIlroy is in a hole.
Going into the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club outside of Philadelphia, all eyes are on Scottie Scheffler and McIlroy. Between them, they’ve won four of the last five majors. The two were the betting favorites this week, too.

But as Round 1 plays out, McIlroy is already in some trouble. He carded a 4-over 74 as part of the early wave, and adequately described his opening round as “s**t.”
It was a rough start for Bryson DeChambeau, as well. The LIV Golf star came in at 6-over, needing a birdie at 18 to just get there. He’ll have a lot of work to do on Friday to even make the cut.
With those two out of the way, Scheffler flew ahead in the late wave. He posted a 3-under 67 to grab a share of the lead with a massive group, which actually marked the first time in his career that he’s held at least a share of the lead after the opening round at a major championship.
But with plenty around, the Wanamaker Trophy is still very much up for grabs. We’ll see what happens Friday.
