The second major of 2026 is underway, with the golf world’s eyes firmly fixed on Aronimink Golf Club for the PGA Championship.
LIV Golf’s Martin Kaymer also produced a strong performance on day one, carding a three-under 67, as did Min Woo Lee, Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jäger, Ryo Hisatsune, and Alex Smalley to match Scheffler’s opening round outing.
And with that in mind, here are the latest headlines from the world of golf…
PGA Championship gets off to controversial start
The 2026 PGA Championship got off to a controversial start after club pro Braden Shattuck produced a wayward drive on the inaugural tee shot of the tournament.
Shattuck, who is one of 20 club professionals in the 156-player field, was awarded the privilege of opening the tournament in Pennsylvania. However, his tee shot saw Shattuck pull his drive toward the perimeter fence, leaving him uncertain of whether his ball stayed in bounds.
The 31-year-old proceeded to hit a provisional ball, only to then find out his original shot had come to rest just inside the fence at Aronimink, which has not held a major championship since the 1962 PGA Championship. Shattuck ended up finishing the opening round 11-over.
Woods’ private plane touches down in Florida
Tiger Woods’s Gulfstream G550 reportedly touched down at Palm Beach International Airport earlier this week after having departed from Zurich on Wednesday.
The 15-time major winner announced earlier this year that he was taking an indefinite leave from golf following his car crash and DUI arrest in Florida back in March. Following the incident, Woods entered rehab in Switzerland where he has been in constant contact with girlfriend Vanessa Trump, who is standing by the legendary golfer despite reportedly being mortified by the events that happened two months ago.
It is not clear whether Woods was aboard the plane or if it was merely returning to the U.S. with his family on board following a visit to Switzerland to see him.
The 50-year-old reportedly entered a 90-day program in Zurich, which he could exit voluntarily at any point. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health,” wrote Woods in a statement after announcing he would be stepping away from golf.
“This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
