You can get 500 golf lessons a day on Instagram. That’s the problem.
Shaun Webb and Mike Granato break down what they call the “golf swing hamster wheel” β the trap most amateur golfers are stuck in. Try a tip. Bail after one bad shot. Try the next tip. Spend years working hard and going nowhere.
This episode of the Athletic Motion Golf Podcast is the framework AMG uses to coach players off the hamster wheel for good. The five-step system covers what to look for in an online coach, why most ground force teaching is guessing, the Tony Rogerio 3×5 card rule for real improvement, Jack Nicklaus on why a swing change has to feel weird, and how to use Swing System 2.0 and the Swing Coach app to build a blueprint you don’t have to rebuild every six months.
What you’ll learn:
The first question to ask any online coach. “Do you measure?”
Why ground force teaching without force plates is mostly guessing
The parking lot analogy that explains why most amateurs never improve
The Tony Rogerio 3×5 note card rule. Three things for a full year
The Jack Nicklaus answer for “why does this feel weird?”
Why feel is the least reliable source of feedback in the golf swing
How to calibrate today’s feel against tomorrow’s drift

Really enjoyed it! Looking forward to more videos! π₯π
Running on the hamster wheel getting nowhere was me for 8 months! Decided to change my swing last fall, put in all the reps but felt like even though it looked better on camera my striking was way worse. Biggest thing that helped me get out of the hole was setting up stations that provided instant feedback. Now my irons have been π€
Swing coach hits me with club outside by 1, club shallow by 1, head up by 1. I literally never get a βgood swingβ but I exhaust myself trying to get one! Sean makes it look so easy.
After I played poorly in a tournament yesterday, this is exactly the pep talk I needed. Thank you.
Excellent info and very important! I think the biggest challenge for having access to information is whether that works for you and your swing, and not just something to try. Almost every video says "if you slice, you are probably coming over the top" so I've been doing everything I can for 35 years to not do that. Guess what, video and coaches told me that I am too much from the inside, dragging the handle and leaving the clubface wide open at impact, hence the slice. More info doesn't always mean better feedback. If you fine gentlemen could do a video on methods for self-diagnosis, basically what to look for on video or what a Swing Coach feedback prompt really means, that would be great as many of us become golfing hypochondriacs where the most recent post is definitely our problem.
i used to be "that guy", back in the 90's. Ever day was like starting over from scratch. Then i got one of those big ass camcorders and saw that i had a serious OTT move. That is the best therapy…….when the golfer himself makes the self realisation . I have seen pro's videotape students who have the most horrendous ott u've ever seen and then ask the student "what he see's". and the student thinks everything is fine.
