Women’s Golf Sits Third Following Round One at NCAA Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Pepperdine women’s golf was one of three teams to shoot under par in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals from Stanford Golf Course on Monday.

The Waves posted a 1-under team score to position themselves in third place heading into Tuesday’s second round, and are seven strokes ahead of sixth place as the top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month. Stanford, at 9-under, holds a four-stroke lead on the team leaderboard.

Eunseo Choi paced the Waves individually with a 2-under-69 on the day, putting herself in the top-5 and four strokes off the lead, held by New Mexico State’s Emma Munch at 7-under.

As the first group off the first tee, the Waves began play on an overcast morning before the sun emerged and temperatures reached 70 degrees by noon.

“It was a solid round today, as we had five scores counting throughout the day,” noted head coach Laurie Gibbs following the round. “We look forward to round two.”

Pepperdine will be in the first groupings off of hole one again Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. alongside Stanford and Oregon State.

Eunseo Choi posted a 2-under 69 to lead the way for Pepperdine, putting her tied for fifth individually following 18 holes of play. Choi began the day with a birdie on the first hole, eventually recording two birdies and a bogey on both the front and back nine.

Kylee Choi shot an even par round of 71 to begin the tournament, placing her in a tie for 16th so far on the individual leaderboard. Choi had a consistent round with 16 pars, while making birdie on the par-5 seventh with her lone blemish being a bogey on 16.

Jeneath Wong also came in at even par on the day in 16th place, with a more colorful scorecard. She began the day with an eagle on the first hole, eventually finishing the front nine with a 37 (+2). Wong rebounded with her second eagle of the day on the 12th, before making birdie on 13. She accounted for two of the four total eagles on the day across the field.

Grace Anderson registered a 1-over 72 in her opening round, tying her for 24th on the individual leaderboard. Anderson was steady throughout the round with an even par 35 on the front nine before shooting 37 on the back. She logged two birdies on the day, coming on holes two and 12.

Yingzhi Zhu logged a 3-over 74, putting her in a tie for 39th. Zhu began with a 38 on the front nine before shooting even par on the back nine, with her lone birdie of the day coming on the par-5 12th.
