Rookie’s life-changing $5m PGA win as Aussie sends major warning, Rory worry emerges — Truist Championship wrap

Kristoffer Reitan claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Truist Championship as Min Woo Lee found form at the right time and Rory McIlroy raised concerns about his fitness less than a week out from the PGA Championship.

Norway’s Reitan finished 15-under par overall with a two-under final round 69 to win by two shots from Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard in the US$20 million (A$27.6m) signature event at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

In just his 15th PGA Tour start, the world No.48 became the second ever Norwegian to win on the US Tour.

The 28-year-old won twice on the DP World Tour last year and earned a PGA Tour card by coming eighth in the Race to Dubai rankings.

“I don’t have any words, to be honest. This is way more than I expected and for it to happen this quickly is just unreal. Yeah, a dream come true,” Reitan said.

Only a few years ago, Reitan contemplated quitting professional golf and becoming a YouTube golf content creator.

He now has status on the PGA Tour for two years as well as the chance to play all four majors as a result of collecting the US$3.6m (A$5m) winner’s cheque.

Reitan credits with rediscovering his passion for the game to reaching such heights.

“It helped me find my game again. It helped me discover my talents again,” he said of that tough period.

“Yeah, that was something really important to me, which I try to remind myself of every single day. So that was definitely a huge thing for me getting back and starting to play some good golf again.”

Australia’s Min Woo Lee fired an equal low round of the day seven-under par 64 to finish in a tie for 14th.

The 27-year-old carded six birdies and an eagle in an excellent tune up before the PGA Championship at Aronimink in Pennsylvania.

Lee’s eagle came on the 347-yard par 4 14th as he drove the green before holing a near 26-foot putt to put a two on his card.

McIlroy had onlookers worried as he was spotted limping around Quail Hollow – where he has won four times previously.

But the Masters champion insisted after he bounced back from a third round 75 with a final round 67 to jump into the top 20.

“Yeah, I’ve got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot. But it’s underneath my nail. So I can’t really get to it or so it’s a little sore, but I’ll be all right,” he said.

McIlroy was then asked whether it was to blame for his Saturday struggles, he replied with a laugh: “No, not at all. No, that was — I wish that was an excuse, but absolutely not.”

It was a disappointing finish for the PGA Tour’s newest member as Alex Fitzpatrick missed his chance to claim a maiden individual win with a final round 73.

The Englishman, who earned his place in America by winning the Zurich Classic alongside his US Open champion brother Matt last month, finished three shots behind Reitan after starting the day in the lead.

He quickly fell pack to the back, however, with a bogey at the second and a three-putt double bogey at the third.

“I don’t really know. I’m disappointed not to have won, but I’m also really proud of myself for how I battled out there,” Fitzpatrick said when asked of his emotions post-round.

“I was 3-over through 3 and then in my head I’m thinking I could shoot 81 here. So, yeah, I felt like I was super happy that I was very patient. Felt like the birdies I made were good ones. Just happy with the way I battled all day.”

In the other PGA Tour event for the week, veteran Brandt Snedeker claimed a one-shot victory at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

The 45-year-old former world No.4 shot 18-under par across the four rounds to claim his first PGA Tour win in eight years.

Australia’s Karl Vilips finished tied 24th at 8-under following a final round 70, while countryman Ryan Ruffels, who played his first PGA Tour event in four years after qualifying via a YouTube event, ended tied 45th at 5-under.

Cam Davis was further down the leaderboard in a share of 67th at 1-under.
