Kai Trump, 18-year-old granddaughter of US President Donald Trump, is preparing to begin college at the University of Miami as part of its golf program. She now steps into collegiate sport while carrying the weight of a globally recognized surname.
She announced her decision on social media back in August 2024, thanking her parents Vanessa and Don, her extended family, coaches, and support team for helping her reach this point.

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Miami. I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey,” she wrote.
“I would also like to thank my great team for getting me to this point. I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support. I would also like to thank my Mormor for always believing in me.
“I would also like to thank my entire family for always encouraging and pushing me to be the best person I can possibly be. I would like to thank my friends for always cheering me on. Last but not least I would love to thank Coach Janice and Coach Jim for giving me this opportunity. I am supper excited to be a cane and represent the University of Miami. Gooo Canes!”
Battling public perception and online division
Kai recently spoke about the challenges of public perception tied to her family name. Appearing on the IMPAULSIVE podcast with Logan Paul, she explained that much of the opinion surrounding her is shaped by politics rather than her personal identity or achievements.
“I mean, 50% of the world doesn’t like me because of my last name, but like, they don’t actually know me,” she said.
“One time I was out in public, and someone literally walked up to me to tell me that my grandpa (stinks). I’m like, ‘Well thank you so much for taking time out of your day to say that. Great, what do you want me to say to that?”
Trump also reflected on the nature of social media, describing how it tends to amplify extremes on both sides of the political spectrum. In her view, people who fall somewhere in the middle are often overlooked, which contributes to misunderstanding and hostility online.
Heading into her freshman season with the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team, Kai is focused on developing her game and adapting to the demands of collegiate competition.
As she begins this new chapter, she remains focused on building her own identity. While attention around her family is unlikely to fade, her priorities are clear.
