Unpacking our DISAGREEMENTS on Shoes: ASICS Superblast 3, Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4

Matt and Andrea are back for another Between Two Feet episode, comparing notes on a trio of high-performance shoes. They work through the ASICS Superblast 3, the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4, and the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, sharing how each shoe performs across different foot types and running styles. Along the way they dig into the nuances of foam softness and sole flare, how mechanics & foot strike change how you might perceive a shoe, and make the case for why brands diversifying their racing shoe lineups is a win for runners.

  1. At my local running store, some Asics reps had a showcase of their new shoes (Megablast, Metaspeed Tokyo) and I asked several questions, one of which was the legitimacy of the stride vs cadence runners.

They also say it's just marketing as well.

    Also, OBLIGATORY PUN TIME!!!!

I guess your "soles" got flared up after the sole flare discussion.

    PUN GUY, OUT!!!!!!

  2. Power duo crushing it again! 🙂 Great points, loved the discussion.

Superblast 3 was the first Superblast that rubbed my ankles. I think that I sink in the foam too much to the point where the collar rubs me. Older models felt more "democratic" in the sense that if you are a slower runner, you get a decently stable shoe that you can grow into as you get faster in the block. Superblast 3 puts you at the end of the block where you have to run fast to avoid sinking in the foam too much. I understand that Superblast 3 might settle after around 100km but you need to take into account that it's one of the more expensive models on the market so you need to fully commit to an initial suboptimal fit and hope that it breaks in the way you want it to. Older Superblasts had a similar break-in period but it got less stiff as you progressed and that sounds appealing becomes it sounds that they "eventually get better". Superblast 3 being crazy and then "settling down" sounds like "dying faster" to the audience. To most people break-in shoe for that much money is a huge gamble.
