East Potomac Golf Course to undergo ‘historic restoration’

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Saturday drew more golfers to the East Potomac Golf Course, as its future seems a bit clearer.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum released a statement Friday, in which he said East Potomac will undergo what he described as a “historic restoration,” including an 18-hole championship course capable of hosting top-level golf.

But he offered no other details about the course, which has hosted golf since 1921.

“Super happy it’s staying open,” said Joe Tashay.

Burgum and the National Links Trust (NLT) both released a statement regarding a new contract between both parties, which clears the way for NLT to operate the District’s three public golf courses. The Trump administration canceled the previous agreement back in December 2025.

The big concern among golfers is who will operate the course once crews have finished work on the renovations. Plus, when will work start on the project, and how long will it last?

“I learned how to play here, here, and in Langston. You know, I was up, first off, playing a year before Covid, and I’ve been hooked on golf ever since,” said Lenny Lewis.

Golfers said they don’t want the course to change too much, including affordability.

“For the community to learn, to play, to come out and enjoy a perfect afternoon. And we have plenty of gorgeous $200 tee time courses in the area. Keep this one the way it is,” said Max Linder.

The new contract also clears the way for renovations to take place at Rock Creek and Langston Golf Courses. NLT will continue to operate both of them once those projects have been completed.
