REED CITY – Reed City competed Thursday at The Falls at Barber Creek in Central State Activities Association Blue Division golf action and finished fifth as a team.
Landon Lytle led Reed City with a 95, followed by Ethan Hanson with a 96. Clay Rehkopf carded a 103, Matt Vanderhoof shot a 105, Andrew Kiaunis posted a 107 and Aaron Allen finished with a 117.
“We’ve had some cold and windy weather for most of our events this season,” Reed City coach Chris Hanson said. “The course was in great condition and we had some good scoring. Landon Lytle led the team with 95, Ethan Hanson 96, Clay Rehkopf with 103, Matt Vanderhoof with a 105, Andrew Kiaunis 107 and Aaron Allen 117.
“Matt and Andrew had their lowest rounds as high school players. Landon had a 90 for his lowest round so far at the last CSAA event. I’ve been very pleased with the progress this season, though it’s coming to a close too fast already.”
Hanson said the team has focused on simplifying play and improving its mental approach.
“We work a lot on keeping play simple and focusing on our mindset as far as results and outcomes are concerned,” Hanson said. “The whole group has shown lots of improvement in putting, ball striking, short game and decision making. It’s been fun to watch as coaches. We’ll keep working and hope to see the results continue in the few remaining weeks.”
Pine River takes second
Manton finished first with a score of 182, followed by Pine River with 205 in golf action on May 7.
Johnny Jacobs paced Pine River with a 45, followed by Caden Grimm with a 47, Parker Hayes with a 49 and Kale Workman with a 64.
“I was happy to see Johnny play better today and see Caden continue his play into the 40s,” Pine River coach Toddy McCormick said. “This was a good warm-up for our team before the conference championship in a little over a week. It was good exposure for our guys.”
Pine River defeats McBain
On May 5, Pine River defeated McBain 190-262 at Lakewood On The Green.
“The course conditions were in excellent shape today, but temperatures continue to remain hard for the team to play in,” McCormick said. “Many thanks to Lakewood On The Green for hosting us this season, especially tonight when we were fitted into their league commitments.”
Senior Caden Grimm earned medalist honors with a season-best 43, followed by Eli Smith with a 45, Johnny Jacobs with a 49 and Parker Hayes with a 53.
“I am thrilled to see the way Caden is playing these last three matches,” McCormick said. “This is our fourth player that has earned medalist honors this season. Caden made this a goal and he made it happen today. It was great seeing how our entire team embraced this accomplishment.
“This is a great testament to the continued competitiveness within the team. They yearn to be at the top of the podium. We still haven’t played to our potential with all of our golfers shooting well at the same time. It’s the right time going into next week’s play.”
