PRIMER: Cyclones Prepare for NCAA Louisville Regional

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Women’s Golf team is set to take part in the NCAA Louisville Regional next week, playing Monday through Wednesday at the Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

THE LEAD

The Iowa State Cyclones head to Simpsonville, Ky. for the NCAA Louisville Regional. As the No. 3 seed, Iowa State is making its 16th-straight appearance, and 20th overall, in an NCAA Regional. The top five teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships, as the Cyclonitas look to get back to Carlsbad, Calif. for the second-straight year and third time in program history.

COURSE INFORMATION

The Louisville Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course designed by Spencer Holt that offers a challenging, yet fun, experience to all skill levels. There are seven tee box options to choose from that range from 5,000 to 7,200 yards and are accommodating to all age groups. The lush bent grass greens and fairways make for a turf experience that is unlike anywhere else in Kentucky.

KEY STORYLINES

-Iowa State is coming off its first Big 12 Championship in program history, with two Cyclones placing in the top 10.

-Nichakorn Pinprayoon got her third win of the season, as she became the fourth Cyclone to earn medalist honors at the Big 12 Championship. Senior Pammy Chookaew finished eighth, as she became the seventh Cyclone to earn All-Tournament Team honors multiple times in her career.

-ISU’s 16-year streak of making an NCAA Regional is the third-longest in the Big 12 and the 15th-longest in the country. Arizona and Arizona State lead the country with 33-straight appearances.

-The Cyclones have faced seven of the opponents from the NCAA Louisville Regional, holding a 13-3 record against them this season.

-Head Coach Christie Martens was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second time in her career, as she also earned the honor in 2011.

-The Cyclones will meet three other Big 12 opponents at the NCAA Louisville Regional in BYU, Houston and Kansas State. The Cyclones have a 9-1 record against them this season. 

-Pinprayoon (2nd – 71.21), Chookaew (3rd – 71.42) and Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn (9th – 72.72) find themselves in the Top 10 in school history in single-season stroke average.
