MOBERLY, Mo. — The South Shelby boys golf team is giving Kevin Mitchell quite a ride in his final season as head coach.
The Cardinals qualified for the Class 1 state tournament as a team, finishing second Thursday in the District 2 tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Club. South Shelby posted a 333, bested only by Glasgow and its district-winning 320. Canton finished third with a 347.
South Shelby and Glasgow will tee it up for 36 holes during the Class 1 state tournament May 18-19 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.
Cardinals senior Colt Schmitz tied for second overall individually, posting a 7-over 77, as all five South Shelby golfers finished in the top 21 of the 106-golfer field. Van-Far senior Pacey Reading also shot a 77.
Glasgow senior Bronson Foster took medalist honors with a 74.
South Shelby senior Carson Gough tied for 11th with an 83, while senior Chase Moellering tied for 18th with an 86. Seniors Kole Lanpher and Waylen Owens tied for 21st with 87s.
Canton sophomore Noah Bringer tied for fourth with a 79 to advance to state as an individual. Tigers freshman Landon Shaffer also is headed to state individually after tying for 18th with an 86.
