Charley Hoffman on Playing With Tiger, Never Beating Him, and the Tour Pro He Almost Fought at AT&T

Charley Hoffman played alongside Tiger Woods for three years on the PGA Tour and couldn’t beat him once. He breaks down what it was actually like competing against Tiger in his prime — the galleries ten deep on every fairway, the jitters of playing with him for the first time at Memorial, and why nobody since has come close to what Tiger did for the game. Plus: the story that probably hasn’t been told before — the tour pro who took a rage divot on the 12th tee at AT&T Pebble Beach in front of a major sponsor, the confrontation that followed, and why Charley and that player haven’t said a single word to each other since.

  1. Always been a Charley Hoffman fan. Glad his shoulder has healed up and is back competing on the tour again. Best of luck Charley!
And it turns out he's a great podcast guest!

  2. I went to Fallbrook high school 96-00. He won California high school state championship for poway in 94 and 95. Boss of a golfer. Poway was in our league and they were tough.

  3. Many years ago I attended the PGA at Wingfoot. I had to get 2 holes ahead of Tiger just to get on the ropes. All of a sudden this mob of people, literally hundreds, come marching at me following Tiger. I stayed to watch his approach shot from the fairway then got the hell out of there. It was nuts.

  4. The way pros act in pro-ams really says a lot about who they are. I remember Greg Norman taking a lot of time with the amateurs even with everything else he had going on. (It was a lot) Big hats off to him. Some other pros not so much.

  5. Nobody cares ,let’s see when he gets this nonsense behind him and he has been very reckless and is completely wrong ! I guarantee he will play again he probably will be Ryder cup co-captain and when he plays on the senior tour crowds will be crazy ! Everyone will forget about the past again ! TV will be all over it !

  6. What a joke! I never understood why fellow pros were intimidated by Tiger? True, he was a generational talent, but that's it. It's not going to war and getting limbs blown off or getting shot. If you lose you lose, who cares. Tiger couldn't last 30 seconds in the ring with Mike Tyson, now that's who I'd be intimidated by. Eff Tiger, turns out he was a POS multiple affair drug abuser!

  7. I played against Garrett in high school a few times, and he was the same back then, He either Doubled or Tripled the 18th to lose a 10-15 school Invitational (MIT) at my home course and he was throwing a tantrum blaming the course (Country Club). To say there were several people happy he didn't win would be the kindest way to put it. This was ~34 years ago, so it was definitely not a one-time event. Having said that, I wrecked golf carts and got fired from that course more than a few times..

  8. I saw Charlie play at the Buick Open. He was about 5 feet away and I said, "Go get em Hoffy." Charlie quickly looked around, like he'd heard a childhood friend.

  9. 2000 US Open Qualifying at Fairbanks Ranch I beat a young Mr Hoffman in a playoff – thought I was gonna be top10 in the world. Turns out – no! That’s you!!! Congratulations my man on an amazing career!

  10. Like the Golf Man Cave! I’ve watched Charley play some awesome golf over the years. Having a really good career. I would always chuckle when he walked up to first tee with our local surfer bleached hair cut…. Cheers from Socal ! 😂

  11. I had tickets to the AMEX when it was at Harding Park and got to go there on a Tuesday to watch a practice round. Overall, it was quiet and during practice rounds, you can pretty much walk right behind the player down the fairway. I got to follow Davis Love III for a few holes then saw Sergio and Jimenez, so I began to follow them. There were maybe 8-10 of us following the group. Then I see this huge crowd of about 200 people walking down 14. I knew it was Tiger but couldn’t find a spot so I walked to 18, which was packed with people and found a spot to wait. A practice round! That’s the power of Tiger back then.

  12. Charlie always seemed like he was simply a normal guy who just happened to be a GREAT golfer. Always enjoyed watching him when he was in contention. Great interview.
