The ball going further is the equivalent of lowering the basket. The ball is the same size as before.
The courses are designed for hazards at certain distances to create more challenging thought and ball striking. Currently many players just hit over any fairway issues and only have to deal with rough. So make the balls spinnier for pros where a less than perfect ball gets off line easier, the advantage, which has little effect on course design is the ball can be spun more for bigger draws, fades and bite. So its still the same cerebral game, but with more consequences for a mis-hit. And courses play the way they were designed.
Another advantage is the opportunity to tournaments on the old courses that never could or would be able to expand to fit the new lengths.

Play courses with more trees. I’d love to see more tournaments at courses like Hilton Head. Don’t change the golf ball; just demand fewer drivers off the tee.
A dialed back golf ball would probably keep amateurs from hitting balls so far into the woods.

Making the courses longer isn't the answer (or feasible in many instances). Some of the hardest holes aren't long. The placement of the hazards and the length of the rough can make or break a hole. There should be more of a risk reward aspect on more holes.
In mostly all other sports the governing body supplies the ball: baseball, football, tennis, soccer, even snooker and ping pong! The introduction of ‘metal woods’ with the trampoline and gear effect has completely changed golf and its parameters. If baseball used aluminum or carbon fibre bats all of the stadiums would have to redesigned, absolutely ridiculous! Another important problem with golf is that the players have been conditioned by sports psychologists and are now the most boring athletes to watch by far.

Totally agree. Why can't we just grow the dang rough up a little, and make smashing driver every hole more penal? Seems like an easy fix.
arguments aren't holding up and another thing to consider are however many 100s of courses will be obsolete or have become obsolete already!
I agree with Kevin. My rub is the upper echelon of the USGA are mostly a bunch of blue bloods that belong to courses that 99.9% of Americans can never access. I think it's a lot of jealousy as well
The equipment has made all the local courses obsolete. I am driving the ball much farther than when I was in my 20's. I am 76.
What about mandos like they have in disc golf? You have to keep it along the fairway and can't bomb it over the trees?

USGA has shit the BED with rolling the ball back, where they FUCKED up is letting the Driver head size get to 460 CC , I said 30+ years ago that the driver head size should have STOPPED at 330CC , THATS WHERE The problem started !!!!
The ball isn’t lowering the average players scores ffs. Who cares how far the pros hit it? I think you should allow all Pro athletes in every sport to use steroids if they want to 😂. Just move par from 72 to 68 or whatever
People want to play the same equipment as the pros. Period.
Baseball has used the same ball and bat for decades. Football uses the same leather though gloves make catching easier. Basketball haven't changed though they're trying. His argument actually shows why there needs to be regulations on golf balls. People aren't arguing LeBron is better than Jordan because the ball is different. Consistency in equipment is needed to pick the best in the game.
Grow the rough and make missing the fairways a real problem
Look at the size of the greens. They’re a half acre or more. Take Pinehurst 2 they had to be very accurate into the greens where the winner there was 4 under if the greens are smaller these pro’s would have to emphasize accuracy which in my opinion pros should be more known for
Agree with Kevin's take on the golf ball. The primary reason that tour players are longer than a generation ago is that they are more athletic. Equipment improvements are much less of a factor.
This lie that every sport has better athletes now is so gay. Stop lying. Basketball, by example, is worse. They stand around and still get hurt standing there. Stop with the lies! We are not living in the best of times….quite the opposite
How can people not understand that if you roll the ball back the longer hitters are still going to have a huge advantage, and it might even be a bigger advantage, because the shorter hitting pros will be having longer irons into greens. They have longer irons into greens now, but imagine the advantage the big hitters will have when the ball doesn't go as far.
No need to lengthen course if you simply change par. This simple move is likely to exponentially increase the psychological stress levels of the pros.
governing bodies seem to what to make the history books about themselves what's wrong with moving forward and showing how the human race can evolve through technology and functional training and set new records and standards for the next generation to try and improve on always moving forward not to try and stay stuck in the past, great champions of bygone era's will always be great champions no matter how good future champions become
Great so what Kisner is basically saying is that eight and 9000 yard courses are the future. Sorry team I’m gonna side with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player on this one.
Wrong on the "we don't do it with any other sport" comment. While amateurs may choose to use the same high standard equipment as pros, some use smaller/lighter basketballs and footballs. Recreational soccer players rarely play on a huge regulation pitch. In golf the tees that the pros are forced to use are literally closed to the public at Torrey Pines. Does Kisner whine that non-pro players get to use the shorter set-up too? The NFL football and MLB baseball are essentially the same as 75 years ago… if they kept making those balls fly further but couldn't limitlessly expand the playing field then the same restrictions would be proposed, even if the mixed adult parks & recreation league could keep using the flyers.
Also, what's up with the false equivalency when he asks what will be so special if his amateur buddies drive it past him during their recreational foursome if he has to use a different ball from them? Why would he do that, and who is proposing that? If he's on his own time playing with his own friends they can decide among themselves what balls are used. Talking about Tour events here….
