Power well placed after opening round at Myrtle Beach

Seamus Power is well placed after a solid three-under-par opening round in the Myrtle Beach Classic.

The Waterford golfer carded a round of 68 to sit in tied-15th, four strokes off the lead in South Carolina.

Power birdied all three par fives, as well as the opening hole, with just one dropped stroke after a wayward approach at the eighth.

He is four behind the leader, Scotland’s Martin Laird, who carded an opening 64. England’s Aaron Rai sits second on his own at six under.

Power, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, is part of a large grouping on three under which includes Brooks Koepka, the most high profile player in the field.

The five-time major winner is in South Carolina rather than at the Truist due to the terms of the PGA Tour’s Returning Member Programme, which bars him from receiving a sponsor’s invite to signature events.

Koepka was philosophical about his exclusion, saying he was “itching to get in, but I’m accepting of where I’m at, and I understand that there’s prices to pay for coming back, and I’m willing to accept those and whatever I have to do.”
