Men’s Golf Punches Ticket to NCAA Corvallis Regional

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men’s golf team has secured the No. 5 seed for the NCAA Corvallis Regional at Trysting Tree Golf Club, set to take place from May 18-20, as announced during Wednesday’s NCAA selection show.

The Bruins will be competing as one of 13 golf programs in the Corvallis Regional. The other 12 participants include host institution and No. 10-seed Oregon State, along with (1) Arkansas, (2) Texas Tech, (3) Oklahoma, (4) Charlotte, (6) Notre Dame, (7) San Diego, (8) Purdue, (9) Georgia Southern, (11) Liberty, (12) Xavier and (13) Sacramento State.

The upcoming men’s golf championship field will feature 81 teams and 45 individuals, beginning in regional competition to compete for a spot in the championship finals. The regional field includes six different regionals, with play beginning on Monday, May 18 and continuing through Wednesday, May 20.

UCLA will be making a quick return to the Pacific Northwest, having recently won the Big Ten Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., last weekend (Pumpkin Ridge is located nearly 95 miles to the north of Corvallis, Ore.).

“It’s a great opportunity to for our guys, being back up in Oregon, and we had good vibes up there from the Big Ten Championship win,” UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. “It’s an area where our team seems familiar and comfortable with. But the message with our team right now, it doesn’t matter we get sent or who is in the regional. Either way, you’ve got to play great golf. You have to try to be the best versions of yourself. That is what we’ll focus on. We want to prepare and learn as much about the golf course as we can ahead of time. We need to get our minds thinking about golf course planning and preparation, so that is what we’ll do. Going to the regional is obviously a great opportunity to advance into nationals. It’s a unique event in college golf, where until regionals and nationals, you have to play to a certain level to advance and if you don’t, then your season is over. We look at that as a positive opportunity and something to be excited about. We will try to take that spirit with us to this regional and go there and put our best foot forward, to see where that puts us.”

Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals (not on those qualifying teams) who will compete in the NCAA Championships. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals (not on those teams) will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals (not on those teams).

The low five teams and low individual from each region will qualify for a spot in the championship finals. Thirty teams and six individuals in total will compete in the finals from Friday, May 29 to Wednesday, June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

This will mark UCLA’s third consecutive team NCAA Regional appearance. Last spring, the Bruins finished fifth at the NCAA Auburn Regional to advance into the NCAA championship field for the first time since the 2017-18 season. UCLA finished in a tie for 20th place among 30 teams at the NCAA championship field and did not advance into match play.

UCLA has won two NCAA Championships with the last title coming in 2008. UCLA also won the NCAA title in 1988. The Bruins have won five NCAA Regional Championships – 2003, 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
