  1. Those Irons are fugly as hell too. Looks like they slapped their logo on whatever factory irons Costco and Tokomo are getting their irons from. The fact that Rose wouldn't play these till after the Masters pretty much says it all. It's not like they just rolled off the production line yesterday, they 100% would have wanted that to be a story making their Debut at the masters but not even Rose would take that deal.

  2. Her Nike deal most likely requires her to be wearing their logo anytime she is holding a golf club on camera. But it's probably foreshadowing what happens when a non-golf company decides to make clubs out of the blue.

  3. It doesn't make any sense. No one wants this and no one asked for it. The only person that should have these clubs is someone that wants to drive up in an Orange McLaren wearing an orange race suit out on the course with their orange McLaren bag and head covers and these lame irons to top it off.
Why didn't they just make an awesome driver that's orange. I think there's a gap in the market for an orange driver.

  4. I will say, I checked these out with the McClaren rep yesterday @ the truist, in person the blades actually look and feel pretty great, but year not a whole lot of innovation.

  5. I don’t get your logic. If irons are cheaper than ever to make and they are charging the most, how are they not making money?

A lot does make sense. A retired golfer (mostly) and a senior tour player from the same country as this company both make sense.
Rose at the peak of his game does not make sense but considering he has a lot of control and influence makes sense.

Of course: Only on golf do people say everything in this market is too expensive, what this market needs is even more expensive stuff.
But the fact is that works with the rich. If they think something makes them special they get it.
As they say a sucker is born everyday.

I do think over time if they stick with it they could become a solid golf company; they have great engineers and all of that; but right now obviously they are babies with a whole lot to learn.

Again, my focus is on Justin Rose who the golf world would love to see win a masters or add a major or more to his legacy.

Rose is playing such great golf at major championships it would be a shame if this is what keeps him from another major or two.

  6. One thing to consider is, in F1, there is a cost cap. A lot of manufacturers are branching out so they can keep top talent on the books, but not be charged toward the F1 cost cap. Maybe McLaren is doing this as a way to 'store' some of their talent, off the F1 books, to be swapped in when they need them?

  7. You could make the same argument about the supercar they make. It’s not profitable. McLaren get involved in many different projects including trying to save the barrier reef. Many organisations use them and their engineers to help develop different technologies etc etc. I actually taught Ron Denis’s kids 23 years ago in Woking near the factory. He’s now not involved but started the process. PXG came from a billionaire that just wanted to create clubs , now it could be argued they are a global success. I’m sure McLaren have the same thought process, start small build a market then grow. The reviews I’ve seen are all very positive and yes I agree about the price point but they are obviously targeting a particular market like any company would when producing new products golf industry or not.

  8. Many channels now show and promote DTC clubs that are honestly far better looking clubs. Nike failed and 'maybe' both Rory and Tiger could have done better at the time when Taylormade and Callaway were way ahead of them.

  9. $1500 for 4 clubs. I pretty much quit golf 10 years ago. Drives are over $500. I don’t have $1000 in my old set for everything. Prices are ridiculous. I had ping eye 3s forever. Got some callaway stealth irons. Hated them. Kept the pings and sold the stealths. It’s all about money. The performance isn’t that much better
