WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Watertown developer Jake Johnson has decided against buying the remaining land that was once part of Ives Hill Country Club.
“I realized the deed restriction would be too big of a hurdle to overcome,” Johnson told 7 News on Tuesday.
Johnson is referring to the deed restriction that limits the Ives Hill golf course to nine holes. He said on Tuesday that he had hoped to return Ives to an 18-hole course.
Ives Hill had been an 18-hole golf course until 2023, when the city bought what is now called the Thompson Park Golf Course. As part of that deal, previous owner PJ Simao agreed to a deed restriction limiting Ives to nine holes.
That same year, Simao sold the nine-hole course to Johnson for $1.9 million.
Last month, Johnson said he purchased the remaining land from PJ Simao, who previously owned the golf course.
Simao declined to comment on the deal falling through.
