KINGSLAND – The Andrews girls golf team makes a habit of saving its best for the final round of a tournament.
That certainly was the case Tuesday during the Class 4A State Tournament at Legends Golf Course.

The Lady Mustangs shot a 306 on Tuesday and turned a three-shot lead into a 14-stroke victory and another state championship.
The 623 total earned Andrews its fourth straight state title and 21st state crown in program history, which adds to its UIL state record.
Glen Rose came in second with a 320-317—637 total, while Frisco Panther Creek finished with 334-335—669.
“We had to work pretty hard for this one. Glen Rose has a tough team,” said Andrews coach Mark Burgen. “The big difference between today and (Monday) is we just cleaned up some unforced errors around the greens. We had some struggles and inconsistencies with putting and chipping. So, after the round (on Monday), after we went and ate, we came back to the course and probably got a good, couple of hours of practice in and focused on chipping and putting, and we cleaned up on those mistakes today.”

Burgen added that the team’s experience also helped to improve from the first round.
“We’ve got three seniors and two juniors who I feel are pretty battle-tested,” he said. “At the regional tournament, we were behind Glen Rose by three after the first day. The second day we really sharpened some things up and the 289 team score was an all-time school record for us. (On Monday) we shot a 317, which wasn’t our standard but at least it was good enough to have a slim lead. Today, our team score was 306, which is the kind of team that we are. You’ve got to give them credit. The girls put in the hard work, and they’ve been in these moments before. We’ve got a lot of kids who have been in this situation before and maybe they handled it a little better.”
Every Lady Mustang finished in the top 18 of the individual standings, led by senior Nichole Thomas-Subia, who finished in a tie for fourth with a 78-72—150 total. Senior Abby Ballou also earned all-state honors as she tied for 10th with an 80-77—157. Senior Sloane Livingston tied for 12th (77-81—158), junior Briauna Van Horn tied for 14th (82-77—159), and junior Emma Sauceda tied for 18th (83-80—163).
Burgen said Thomas-Subia birdied three of her last five holes to shoot even par.

“That was fantastic to go out her senior year, leading us with an even-par round. That’s pretty good stuff,” Burgen said.
Taylor’s Rylen Darter won the individual medalist title with a 2-under 140.
This also marks the third time in Andrews’ program history that it has won four straight titles. The Lady Mustangs first did it from 1989-92 and then won nine straight from 2011-19.
“It doesn’t happen very often, and I’ve been able to be a part of two of those with the early 2000s teams,” Burgen said. “To be part of it again, I’m blessed. We’ve got a group of kids to buy in to doing what it takes to have a chance to do that. We have supporting parents, we’ve got a supporting community. It takes a village, I guess, to create this program and we’ve got a pretty cool village in Andrews.”
