This Lake Tahoe resort has a private beach, a lakefront golf course, and a new restaurant

Mark Twain once called Lake Tahoe “the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” That was more than 150 years ago, and the view hasn’t changed much. What has changed is access. Of the lake’s 72 miles of shoreline, just 34 are open to the public, and on busy weekends, even locals can struggle to find a place to get in.

Beach access wasn’t an issue on my recent trip to the lake. My boyfriend and I checked into the Edgewood Tahoe Resort, which sits on 235 acres of lakefront property, including a wide swath of golden sand. There were no lines, no crowds, and we were steps away from the water.

The Edgewood is one of the only beachfront hotels on Lake Tahoe and the only luxury property directly on the shoreline. It’s a serene setting, with unobstructed views of rugged peaks reflecting across the water. When you’re there, it feels as though the rest of the world has melted away, yet it’s only a mile from attractions like Heavenly Ski Resort, the Tahoe Blue Event Center, and casinos and nightlife in Stateline. You don’t even have to get in your car, since the resort offers shuttle service back and forth.

We checked into The Edgewood for Taholistic, an annual weekend event of yoga workshops, clinics, sound bathing, and wellness programming. The weekend was self-directed, rather than one-size-fits-all, and attendees like me were able to pick and choose the experience and schedule that best suited us.

We spent the next few days attending yoga sessions, myofascial release workshops, and chakra intensives. In between, we were served delicious, healthy lunches, and we had the option to participate in activities such as cold plunges in the lake, a beachside sauna, shopping for locally-made products at a pop-up market, and even indulging in mini chair massages from the hotel spa.

Taholistic would have been an incredible opportunity to focus on mind and body anywhere, but the lakeside setting and crisp alpine air were intrinsic to the experience. By the end, we felt clearer-headed, slept better, and felt refreshed when we woke up in the mornings.

As guests of the hotel, we were able to take advantage of additional wellness amenities at The Edgewood, including the outdoor hot tub and year-round heated pool, both with stunning lake views.

Depending on the time of year, complimentary wellness programming at The Edgewood may also include morning yoga, toning and conditioning classes, or herbal salt blending bars. Plus, the resort features an on-site spa offering massages, facials, body treatments, and even an oxygen bar.

Perhaps the most famous offering is the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, renowned for its jaw-dropping views and for hosting the celebrity-studded American Century Golf Championship.

During our stay, we enjoyed spectacular views from our Tahoe King Lakeview Room. In the mornings, we sipped espresso made from our in-room Nespresso machine from a private balcony. The room also featured a gas fireplace, a writing desk, a mini-fridge, and a cozy reading chair. The room was thoughtfully stocked with Frette robes, slippers, a clothes steamer, complimentary bottled water in recyclable aluminum bottles, and turndown service with artisan Napa chocolates.

The oversized bathroom featured a deep soaking tub, a walk-in shower, a wide sink, a separate toilet closet, and luxurious L’Occitane bath amenities.

In addition to lodge rooms, The Edgewood offers private multi-bedroom villas for guests seeking room to spread out and enhanced privacy.

Dining at The Edgewood

Over the course of our three-night stay, we dined at each of the resort’s dining establishments. Our first night, we shared a delicious order of beer-battered halibut and chips at the bar inside The Bistro. The menu is casual, featuring craft cocktails, mocktails, and other options such as flatbreads, burgers, and sandwiches.

The next night, we made a reservation inside The Bistro dining room, which serves brunch and dinner. I ordered a fall-off-the-bone short rib with horseradish mashed potatoes, wilted spinach, and crispy bits of fried parsnips. My boyfriend had the homemade mushroom ravioli with garlic cream, cherry tomatoes, and fried sage. Both meals were delicious and enhanced by views of the lake.

On our last day, we stopped by Brooks Bar & Deck in the clubhouse. The atmosphere here was casual, as befits a place that caters to golfers who come in after a day on the course. We ordered a couple of beers and split an order of the roasted cauliflower appetizer, featuring purple cauliflower, eggplant, whipped tofu, and pistachios, served with a miso-tahini dressing. It was so good that I’m mad I didn’t ask for the recipe.

The highlight of our stay was dinner at The Edge Restaurant and Lounge, which opened last year. The lounge is swanky with a plunging spiral chandelier above the bar, gas fireplaces, and sofas and chairs arranged for private conversations. In addition to libations, the menu highlights dishes like wagyu beef carpaccio with king crab, Tsar Nicoulai Caviar, and black truffle, or spicy tuna tartlettes with lime, ponzu reduction, and crispy rice. Both were incredible, with bold flavors that disappear in your mouth.

The restaurant overlooks the water, with tiered seating to ensure every table has a view. The outstanding menu changes throughout the year to highlight the freshest regional ingredients. Expect a selection of seafood, beef, game, and vegan dishes, along with an extensive wine list and delightful surprises such as a cheese and charcuterie cart.

Diners can choose a five-course tasting menu with optional wine pairings or order à la carte. After two visits, we found it works best for one person to go with the tasting menu while the other orders à la carte, then share everything to try more dishes.
