There is widespread sadness within the golfing community and beyond following the passing of Rupert de Lacy Staunton.
The Castlerea native, who was capped 18 times for Ireland, passed away yesterday (Sunday).
Rupert was the winner of the South of Ireland in 1965 and 1972. He played for Ireland from 1963 to 1973, during which time Ireland won the European Amateur Team Championship at Royal St. George’s in 1965.
He captained the Irish team for a number of years and was a Walker Cup selector.
He also finished as runner-up to Robert Pollin in the Irish Close at County Sligo in 1973.
Predeceased by his parents, Eva and Maurice, infant son, John, brothers, Charlie and Hugh and his sister-in-law Mary, he will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret, heartbroken children, daughters Eva and Rosalind and sons, Ian and Declan, his sisters, Ena and Dorothy, adored grandchildren, Matthew, Nathaniel, Samuel, Isabelle, Max, Ivy and Leo, Eva’s partner Niall and Declan’s wife Emma, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, relatives, cousins, neighbours and friends.
