Men’s Golf Sits in Seventh After Opening Round of Big Ten Championships

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – Rutgers men’s golf completed the opening round of the Big Ten Championships on Friday in seventh place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

The Scarlet Knights turned in a strong first-day performance against one of the nation’s top conference fields in the Big Ten Conference and remain in position to move up the leaderboard with two rounds of stroke play still to come. The Scarlet Knights sit at (+7) in seventh place. Illinois leads the field after 18 holes at 1-under par.

Freshman Lucas Politano paced Rutgers in the opening round, carding an even-par 72 to lead the Scarlet Knights. Politano is tied for 11th place. Grad student Luke Koenig sits one stroke back at 1-over par (tied for 16th), while sophomores Argyle Downes and Bennett Espenshade each posted rounds of 3-over par (tied for 41st). Grad Jeffrey Zatorski also finished the day at 3-over as Rutgers received a balanced effort throughout the lineup.

Pumpkin Ridge’s course provided a challenging test with narrow fairways, strategic bunkering, and quick greens, creating tightly packed scores across the standings. Rutgers remains within striking distance entering Saturday’s second round.

With 36 holes remaining before the championship’s final stage, the Scarlet Knights will look to continue their steady play and climb the leaderboard on Saturday.

Rutgers tees off for round two on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. ET from Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. Sunday’s round will air on television on the Big Ten Network.
