Women’s golf earns bid to NCAA Simpsonville Regional – Auburn Tigers

AUBURN, Ala. – No. 7 Auburn women’s golf has been selected to participate in the NCAA Simpsonville Regional as the No. 2 seed, the NCAA announced during its selection show Wednesday. The regional will be held at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, May 11-13.

“I actually thought we were going to end up in Ann Arbor, and it’s been a long time since I’ve been to Ann Arbor, but it hasn’t been that long since I’ve been to Simpsonville,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “We played in a regional there a few years ago, so it’s nice to have some familiarity with the course. The grass is different, like Kentucky bluegrass. We’ll go a day early and spend some time at a course that has similar grass just so we can get used to it a little bit.

“We were super close within the rankings, and I think we were barely nudged from being a No. 1 seed. Really, our focus is to go there and win the regional and win it walking away. That’s the goal.”

The Tigers will be joined in the regional by No. 6 Arkansas, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 19 Ole Miss, Houston, Virginia Tech, Kansas State, Indiana, College of Charleston, Xavier, Western Kentucky and Murray State. Auburn has earned an NCAA regional bid for the ninth consecutive season the championship has been held and for the 31st time in program history.

Auburn will enter NCAA regionals after winning five events during the regular season, tying the program record for most in a season. The Tigers started the postseason strong at the SEC Championship, finishing the stroke-play portion in fourth place and defeating No. 18 Ole Miss and No. 3 Florida to reach the championship match.

The top five teams from each of the six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. The 30 advancing teams will compete for the national title May 22-27.

The top individual from each site not on an advancing team will also receive a spot in the NCAA Championship to compete for the individual national title.
