SHAFT ANGLE Is the SECRET to Great Ballstriking: Johnny Miller #swingtips #golf #golfswing
Johnny Miller demonstrates how the angle of the shaft at impact plays a major role in determining the direction the ball will start and shares the secret that pros use to increase shaft angle at impact while closing the face to turn a 9-iron into an 8 or 7-iron for extra distance.

I've never heard that before about the ball starting 90° to the shaft angle. I'm surprised instructors don't talk more about that. I feel that is a key fundamental
“A promise of physics.” Such a great line in so much of what golf is. Unfortunately, more often than not, the physics at impact are not matching my desire.
He really does smash the wall between us and the pros. Just from a couple shorts I saw from him my golf game has improved, no exaggeration, significantly. Now I’m loading, balanced and hitting beautiful shots. He really knows how to teach. Tiger, Rory, Scottie are not good teachers. lol Johnny is
The problem is that the ball does not set off at 90 deg to the face. It does not in golf, it doesnt in tennis, and it doesnt in football when the kicker kicks the ball off centre. Physics say the ball starts in the direction of the impact momentum, and the face angle cause a spin. Obviously the face does impact the initial direction to some degree but is not the over riding factor at small angle off swing path. This can be aeen in the golf studio. Now if you take it to the extreme with a large angle off swing path as is evident with the height you get from a lob wedge the face becomes dominant re initial direction. Further evident that the ball leaving at 90 deh to face is if you through a ball at a wall at 45 deg angle the ball does not bounce back t 90 deg to the wall. It bounces back at 90deg to its original path.
If you wanna hit the ball short and wimpy, just do the opposite. LOL
this basic tip Johnny talked about during a golf broadcast about 30 years ago i luckily saw changed my whole golf game i was a block fader until i saw this i went straight to the range that afternoon it took a while to retrain my hands to square up but about a year later square was my repeatable swing dropped about 10 strokes all thanks to Johnny
You know I’ve been trying to lay off the club at the top, flatten out my swing.. my ball striking is phenomenal right now.
I am 69. Over the last 5 years I've worked on developing Moe Norman's concept. Wide stance, club head well behind the ball. Works for me! But Johnny is correct! I hit the ball distances designed by the true loft of the club! The face is never hooded down, I hit a 9iron 145gds, 7 iron 160 drive 240-50! Very accurate! Having some fun. Cancer at 58, changed my bodies rhythm and coordination. Better now then at anytime in my 40 years of golf!
