Sometimes Less Club Is the Smartest Shot | Golf Course Management [Hole 3]

Sometimes the smartest play off the tee isn’t the biggest swing — it’s the right club. Todd Kolb, Director of Instruction for US Golf TV, is back for another hole in this on course coaching series and hole 3 is a perfect example of why course management and smart club selection can be just as important as ball striking.

🏌️ What You’ll Learn on Hole 3:

1. Club Down Off the Tee
At 340 yards Todd makes the smart decision to hit a three iron instead of driver — not because he can’t hit driver, but because he doesn’t need to. Getting the ball in play around 200 yards leaves a comfortable wedge distance and eliminates unnecessary risk.

2. Adjust for Your Tendencies
After pulling a couple of iron shots early in the round Todd factors that tendency into his target selection — aiming slightly right to account for his natural miss rather than fighting it.

3. Playing From Thick Rough
When the approach rolls off the back of the green Todd breaks down exactly how to handle a chip from thick rough — moving the ball back in the stance, gripping firmer to prevent the grass from twisting the clubface and selecting the right loft for the trajectory needed.

4. Adapt During Your Round
One of the most honest and relatable moments in this series — Todd recognizes mid-round that he’s hitting the ball longer than normal and commits to making adjustments going forward. Every round is different and the smart golfer adapts.
