ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Golf season is underway in Rockford as Aldeen Golf Club opened Friday, April 17, following a major bunker renovation project that delayed the course’s seasonal opening.
Golfers began teeing off at 7 a.m. The opening comes after completion of a $2 million bunker reconstruction, one of the most significant upgrades in the course’s history.
The renovation replaced all bunkers on the course using the “Better Billy Bunker” system, a modern construction method designed to improve drainage and reduce long‑term maintenance issues during heavy rain.
Park District officials and course staff have said the upgrades are intended to improve playability while preserving the course’s challenging layout.
Funding for the project was provided entirely through private donations, including contributions from the Norris and Margaret Aldeen Foundation of Rockford and Rick and Lana Engen. The work also reduced the overall bunker footprint and included limited fairway reshaping.
Bunker renovation is expected to improve consistency of play, reduce washouts after storms and allow maintenance crews to return the course to playable conditions more quickly after heavy rain.
Aldeen, considered one of the Rockford Park District’s most challenging public courses, typically opens later than the district’s other courses due to its maintenance needs and spring conditions.
While the full course is open, the Aldeen Practice Centre remains open with hitting mats only, along with the putting green. Grass tees are not yet available.
Ingersoll Golf Course, Sandy Hollow Golf Course and Sinnissippi Golf Course are already open.
