As Rory McIlroy donned his second Green Jacket with pride, his wife Erica Stoll caught attention sporting an eye-catching $100,000 (€85,000) Patek Philippe Twenty-4 rose gold watch.
The 36-year-old McIlroy etched his name in history as just the fourth golfer ever to successfully defend the Masters crown, joining an elite group that includes Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
During his victory speech, McIlroy ensured he acknowledged Stoll for her steadfast support throughout the tournament and beyond, a gesture he overlooked in his initial winners’ remarks after securing the career Grand Slam. After the major concluded, McIlroy gathered for a family photograph with Stoll, their daughter Poppy, his mother Rosie and his father Gerry.
Watch enthusiast and influencer Chad Alexander, with his keen eye for detail, identified the luxurious timepiece on Stoll’s wrist. McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond also has cause for celebration, with reports suggesting he’ll take home approximately €380,000 for his contribution to the victory; typically around 10% of McIlroy’s winner’s cheque of roughly €3.8m.
Alexander further observed that Stoll sported a $95,000 (€81,000) rose gold Patek Philippe Nautilus featuring a diamond bezel during the traditional par three competition on the preceding Wednesday. Interestingly, neither timepiece was made by Omega, the brand that sponsors McIlroy, demonstrating that Stoll maintains her own fashion preferences and doesn’t simply wear watches from her famous husband’s commercial partners.
Furthermore, Stoll isn’t obliged to wear any apparel or accessories from McIlroy’s sponsors. The same goes for Diamond. However, considering the enduring and unwavering friendship the caddie has maintained with McIlroy for almost three decades, the World No. 2 golfer may well gift his loyal companion an exquisite watch as a gesture of appreciation.
Diamond endured relentless scrutiny from golf fans and pundits during the 11-year spell McIlroy went without securing a major title. When that barren run finally ended in profoundly emotional circumstances at Augusta last year, the Holywood man acknowledged his faithful friend’s invaluable input on the course, reports the Mirror.
After claiming his first Masters title, McIlroy said: “I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old. I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We’ve had so many good times together. He’s been like a big brother to me throughout my life.
“To be able to share this with him after all the close calls we’ve had, and all the [nonsense] he’s had to take from people who don’t know anything about the game.
“This one is just as much his as it is mine. He’s a massive part of what I do, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with.”
McIlroy will hope to recreate those poignant moments when next month’s PGA Championship arrives. Last year, the two-time Masters champion suffered a difficult outing, finishing T47, 14 shots adrift of eventual champion Scottie Scheffler.
