Springfield to open municipal golf courses for 2026 season Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Springfield will open its two municipal golf courses for the 2026 season on Wednesday, city officials announced.

Hampshire College to close permanently after fall 2026 semester

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management Executive Director Thomas Ashe said Franconia Golf Course and Veterans Memorial Golf Course will both welcome players beginning April 15.

Both 18-hole courses have recently undergone $1 million in renovations, including significant upgrades to the clubhouses, which had not seen major improvements since the 1960s. City officials say the investments have enhanced the quality of play and modernized facilities for golfers.

The announcement follows a record-setting 2025 season, during which the two courses generated a combined $2.3 million in revenue from rounds of golf and cart rentals.

“The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and tomorrow the clubs will be swinging at our beautiful, award-winning, municipal golf courses. As clear fan favorites, Veterans and Franconia are being nationally recognized and are quickly becoming a hidden jewel in the region, while also offering some of the most affordable rates in the area. The investments and renovations made at both Franconia and Veterans have enhanced the quality of play for players of all ages and levels. On top of that, we invested in transforming the outdated clubhouses at both courses – now the inside of both the Veterans and Franconia Clubhouses, which had not seen any major updates since they were built in the 1960s, matches the quality of the courses. Thank you to PBRM Director Tom Ashe and team for their continued efforts in maintaining these beautiful and affordable courses,” Sarno said.

“Thanks to Mayor Sarno’s support, our municipal golf courses have stood out as popular courses both regionally and nationally. The city of Springfield’s recent $1 million investment in the renovation of both of its municipal golf courses (Veteran’s Memorial and Franconia Golf Course) is already paying dividends. We have also expanded access to the game with our middle school golf program and by offering Adaptive Golf Carts. I am grateful to our dedicated PBRM team here and for Mayor Sarno’s continued support as we gear up for another busy season at our Springfield golf courses,” Ashe said.

Both courses will operate Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to dusk and weekends from 6:30 a.m. to dusk. The city’s golf season typically runs about nine months, beginning in early spring and continuing through late fall.
