Breaking Par on a Course That Doesn’t Look Dangerous

I’m a 3-handicap trying to break par on a short but brutally demanding golf course… but when the course rating sits nearly 4 over par for a scratch golfer, do I even have a chance? Will my golf swing stay precise enough, and can my mentality handle a course where being slightly offline is a disaster?

Today I’m taking on a layout that doesn’t look intimidating on the scorecard… but quickly proves otherwise. This is a full every-shot golf vlog showing what 3 handicap golf really looks like when accuracy is everything, and every mistake is properly punished.

You’ll see exactly what 3 handicap golf honestly looks like on a course like this:
– Every tee shot, approach, chip and putt showing how I manage my golf swing when precision is everything.
– The golf strategies I use when position matters far more than distance.
– On-course decision making when you’re trying to break par on a layout designed to stop you.
– Real golf that can go from in control to scrambling in a single golf swing.
– How a “short” course can be far more difficult than it looks on paper.

If you want to improve your golf mentality, sharpen your course management, and see what happens when a tough course exposes every weakness, this one is for you.

⭐ Jonny Plays Golf is a down-to-earth UK golf vlog following a single-figure handicap golfer on the journey to break par.

Expect proper golf — from tour-level moments to absolute shockers, and everything in between. Plenty of birdies… and just as many bogeys.

My goal is simple: show real golf swings, honest mistakes and course strategy that actually helps you score — without taking it all too seriously.

If you’re a mid-handicapper chasing lower scores or a low handicap golfer wanting better course management, you’ll feel right at home here.

Subscribe for weekly rounds at some of the best courses in Yorkshire and beyond, as I try to break par (or win a match) — and most importantly, have a laugh doing it.

  1. Beautiful course and solid round to say how tough that looked. Great finish on 18 too! Curious, what's your handicap at now?

  2. Tell ya what Jonny it was worth watching just for the last put!! Well played Jonny lovely surroundings you lucky bugger. I think I know which course you’ll be uploading soon because I’ve played it and it’s one of my favourites. I look forward to watching. Keep up the great content Jonny. Respect.

  3. Would be jealous but played in sunny Brighouse today, 1st round of the year in shorts was lovely, shame my golf didn't match the quality weather!

  4. Ok. Pre. Round guess. The last round in S Africa (that i watched) has boosted by a hot start ! So… I’m thinking a more average start this time, culminating in +3 over par. btw (are we in South Africa or am I confused?)

  5. What a putt to finish that was 😂😂😂😂
Surprised to see you chipping today as you normally leave them right on the hole…
    But thats golf I suppose

  6. Those last two holes encapsulate golf perfectly! I had a wonder up and down on the 18th at Rudding yesterday in the sunshine – a 40 yard chip round the oak by the side of the green and then nailed a 10 foot putt back. Makes you love the game! What a great looking course. Welcome back to Blighty.

  7. Pleasure to witness the round in the flesh. Would have to be something out of this world to break par around there tho, absolutely brutal tight that really does not come across on camera and the glass greens. Well played mate

  8. Well what a finish great vid Gary looked like he was not happy but you gave it all and never gave up , hope you got out in the sun back here in the UK shirt sleeves weather but will it last lol

  9. These days, you seem to find a way to pull yourself to at least even par on a rough day, so yes, I believe that you can break par. The course and weather looks amazing!🤘🐵🤘🐵🤘🐵

  10. Having been a member at Sueno in the past and knowing both Pines & Dunes intimately, this was a superb round of golf.
I was interested in how you played the 8th as it is a brute of a hole.
The ex-pro and I used to play to the left hand corner before the water and then take the long shot to the green.
    Well done at +2
