The University of North Carolina Golf team has completed two tournaments during the spring semester, and is currently participating in a third at Palm City, Florida.

So far, the Tar Heels have taken 11th place at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Mauna Lani North Course in Waimea, Hawai’i, and fifth place at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.    

The 17th ranked Tar Heels are currently holding down the 14th spot after two days of play at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm Harbor, Florida. 

The Tar Heels totaled a 34-under par score of 830 in Hawai’i.  Freshman, Carson Bertagnole provided the fireworks for the team with a Saturday 8-under 64.  He was joined by Grant Roscich with a 5-under 67 as Carolina’s two low scorers for the day.

Individually, Keaton Vo was the low Tar Heel for the entire tournament.  He posted a three-day 68-68-65 for a 15-under 201 which was good for 12th place.  Bertagnole’s 70-70-64 was good for a 24th place 12-under 204. Niall Sheils Donegan tied for 38th  with a 9-under 207.  Roscich finished 59th with a score of 210 that was good for six-under par.  Sihan Sandhu closed in the 76th spot with a 2-under 214. 

Auburn won the event behind Jackson Koivun who may be the best college golfer in several years.  The Chapel Hill product took medalist honors with a 25-under par 191.

North Carolina shot a 16-under par 848 in Ponte Vedra.  The team shot a combined 9-under par 279 which was the best by any team on the third and final day.

Roscich took the first top-10 of his two-year college career with a 7-under 209 that put him in a tie for ninth place.  Donegan and Andrew Riley both finished in 20th place with a 4-under 212.    

Koivun once again walked away with top honors with an 11-under 205.

North Carolina headed to Palm City as the second highest ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team.  Virginia is No. 2 nationally behind Auburn. Georgia Tech is just behind UNC at No. 19.    

Bertagnole has an individual ranking of No. 48.  He is the highest ranked Tar Heel just above Donegan at No. 49.  Andrew Riley is No. 120, Roscich is No. 133, and Vo is No. 165. 

UNC is in 14th place after the opening round at the Valspar at 6-under par.  They are well of the pace of first place Auburn who stands at 30-under par. 

Sandhu shot a 5-under 66 on Monday to get to 6-under par for the event which is good for 19th place.  He is one stroke behind Riley at 6-under par.  That is good enough to get on the leaderboard in 10th place.  Roscich is in 31st place at 3-under, and Donegan is in 45th place at 1-under par.
