CultureHouse Sets Up Mini-Golf Course In Somerville’s Union Square

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A tiny mini golf course was set up in Somerville’s Union Square by CultureHouse to bring people together and spark conversation regarding societal issues.

The one-hole course was designed to look like a four foot tall housing complex, something that Culture House Executive Director Aaron Greiner said was meant to catch eyes.

“They’re not just meant to be a little putt-putt course. It’s meant to spark conversation, so we chose to put a triple decker because it’s part of this conversation around affordability and housing, a big issue that we all see and experience in the area,” Greiner said.

The idea to spark conversation at these courses came from the idea of business deals happening on a more traditional golf course, so Culture House spun that idea around to hopefully talks on societal issues at the mini golf course.

Greiner explained that this setup is just a test run, and they hope to expand the concept even further.

“We’re hoping to expand this, you know, probably sometime next year or later this year into a series of multiple ‘city greens,’ as we’re calling them,” he said.

CultureHouse is a nonprofit organization that works to transform underutilized spaces into social infrastructure, and more information on them can be found here.

The Envoy Hotel in Boston wants to change that.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Their on-site bar Para Maria is transforming for two weeks into “261 Para Maria,” a pop-up women’s sports bar concept. The 261 is in reference to Kathrine Switzer’s bib number at the Boston Marathon. Switzer is the first woman to ever compete in the race. Her photo is on display among other famous Boston athletes.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“If you think about where you can go watch the Celtics, you can probably think of five bars right now where you can go watch it. But if you think, where can I go watch the Legacy FC game or the Boston Fleet, you don’t know where to go. We want to be that spot,” General Manager Chris DeMilia said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>They have even adjusted the menu to include food and cocktails inspired by local athletes. That includes the bubbly cocktail the “Katherine Spritzer” or the Aerin’s Cesar Salad, named for the Boston Fleet goalie Aerin Frankel who rates Cesar salads on her Instagram.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“It’s a perfect time because NCAA March Madness will show the women’s brackets as well. Many sports fans traditionally take a day off work to fully enjoy the first round of the March Madness tournament.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“It’s been eight years in a row taking the day off, either the first Thursday or Friday, to watch the games,” said one basketball fan who was enjoying the action at \u003ca href=\”https://www.tonycssportsbar.com/\” target=\”_blank\”>Tony C’s Sports Bar and Grill\u003c/a> in Somerville.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“This is our second annual March Madness get-together,” another Tony C’s patron said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Whether you took the day off to enjoy the action or took an extended lunch break, basketball fans say they have no regrets.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“As a sports fan, it’s one of the best sporting days of the year — hanging out with your buddies, having some beers, watching sports. There’s nothing better than that,” another fan said at the sports bar.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>For those still in the office, there’s some good news: The March Madness app offers a “presentation” button that pulls up fake PowerPoints, spreadsheets and emails to hide your basketball viewing.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“The presentation button on the March Madness app has saved me a few times,” one fan
