I Tried to Break Par at One of England’s Toughest Golf Courses

I Tried to Break Par at One of England’s Toughest Golf Courses

I played a course used for Open Qualifying to see if I could shoot a score good enough to compete. The pressure, the conditions, and the difficulty of this course make it a true test of golf. But the real question is… could I shoot an Open qualifying score?

  1. Dewy greens = putts don't roll and putts don't break as you have to hit harder. Been playing right through this wet winter, mate😂 I also added a little lead tape to get some impetus into the wet ball…

  2. Keep your head up mate! You are striking the ball well. The only thing I noticed is you never adjusted your putter pace to the greens. All of your puts either came up short or stopped almost even with the hole. Needed the pace to go past the hole around a foot. I think that's why some didn't hole

  3. Tough conditions, but I think you should work on different playing strategies to adapt to various course conditions. After the first couple of holes you should have learned that the greens were slow and bumpy from the dew. Therefore instead of trying to chip low running shots which kept coming up short or skipped long, you should have switched to higher / softer chips / pitches that land closer to the hole and stop. If you pace off your putts for distance control and everything is coming up a yard short than you start adding an additional pace to your count to give yourself a little extra speed to combat the slow conditions. It was almost like you wanted to keep doing what you wanted to do, instead of learning from the course conditions and making playing adjustments until the back 9. Not hate, just constructive criticism. I had a similar situation with sanded greens. I pace off my putts and had learned after the first 2 or 3 holes that they were running slower than normal due to the sand, so I started adding an extra pace when I walked off my putts… started draining them after that.

  4. I think you can progress but think your mindset needs to improve especially over praising shots and stating shots are difficult when better golfers would expect more of themselves.

  5. Your putting wasn’t great, leaving putts short but it was quite damp. Back 9, your game was top notch but you put more pressure on yourself trying to make birdie. Lighten up and swing easy, the putts will come!

  6. Purely and simply that was a stone cold putter day. Ball striking and t2g for the most part was high quality. Dust off and onto the next one….hopefully with slightly more conducive greens to putt on 👍

  7. I'm not your standard, but for me, you have to stop chasing the round score and just focus on the next shot. It seemed to take an age to adapt to hit the putts hard enough to overcome the dew. And chasing the -1 score on the 7th hole is just way premature. A good putt is a good putt – focus on a good stroke and let the outcomes look after themselves

  8. I think you are progressing the putting is good for most of it distance control through the dew could have been better but burning the cup all day happens not off much later in the day when the greens are drier might have dropped some of those short game practice

  9. No of course not over but some poor shots there. Also far be it for me a modest 10 handicap but you seem to always be underclubbing? Ball is simply going nowhere but you still try and hit your Summer yardage. 20 yards + short right on hole 2 a glaring example… just a thought.

  10. When the putts dont drop, there's very little you can do. Great tee shots, great approaches.and putts just didnt drop. A few early were on line but left short with the early dew on the greens. Going the right way about it and all the winter practice and persistence will stand you well when it dries out. Keep it up, really enjoying all this latest content. Can't get out myself at the moment due to injury so things keeping me going. Well done.

  11. Constructive criticism, you need to learn from your putts earlier, a caddy will offer another option which will help, playing on your own it didn't give you more time to think as you play faster on your own.
Weather conditions need consideration every time you play.
Apart from that, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself 😃👍

  12. Winter golf all you should be concerned about are hitting fairways and greens in Reg. I would not put any stock in put putting. The greens at the local Muni's I play in the winter a in terrible shape so we just auto 2 put and move to the next hole.

  13. I HATE putting on dew-covered greens. I can never read the speed and breaks. I also don't get as much rollout on the fairways. The balI just rolls differently. I think the dew adds 7 to 10 strokes to my game. You did just fine under those conditions. Learn from it and move on.

  14. Just a thought…You spent the entire round talking about your score. You can't shoot a score. You can only make golf shots. Relax and make good swings without so much reference to results. I know the results are important to you, but focus on making the good swings you make in practice rather than scoring under the pressure you're putting on yourself.

  15. In fairness I don’t think you hit the ball to badly and you didn’t putt badly. The putter wasn’t cold, the greens looked to be rolling so slowly and the condition of them didn’t look great plus add the moisture in that you could see all over them you could be Brad Faxon and hole nothing.

  16. Keep going. Even small steps move you closer to where you want to be. The driver is awesome, you are killing it, setting yourself up for sucess from the fairway. A couple of wayward shots on the first nine didnt help but you played them out. The putting conditions were not the greatest. Heavy dew slowed your roll and affected the ball travel. And I'm no fan of seeing you hit from a mat. Your'e doing what you should to put mental playing notes in your mind. Chalk it up as a lesson learned. Head up and move forward You got this Young Man!

  17. Looking forward to the rest of the series and you can do it mate! Only wish going forward we don’t get spoilers, as you can clearly see in the video pic you were +4 after 15 holes which for me makes it not very fun or exciting to watch when we know the outcome. Really enjoy watching your journey but please no spoilers going forward if possible

  18. greens look like they were punch recently which could cause your feel for speed to be off, when the putts count you will have different green conditions. we know you can putt just this day was slightly off. keep up the good work sir

  19. Head up Alex, your striking the ball lovely. As you say you have given yourslelf so many chances so take the positives out of that. Even your putts have been decent, no three putts!! you are on track!

  20. Try shooting that score, with a card in your hand, off the tips when the course is running and set up for Open Qualifying. Then ask us…is it over? A good watch nevertheless.

  21. Enville is tough, even when the sun is shinning! Your putting let you down but rest of your game was solid. Keep at it, would love to see u in the open!

  22. If golf was that easy and consistent, every man on the planet would be touring the world playing golf.
As I keep reminding my Mrs not everyone is perfect like me 🙄, we need bad days to really appreciate the good one's

  23. my only thought was that you were under hitting your puts nearly all the time. It was weird that you didn't learn that due to the dew and conditions you needed to hit them a little harder. If you had you would have been probably 3 shots better.
