New for 2026, the Ping’s i540 players’ distance iron features some very clever technology that aims to make it even more explosive that its predecessor: here’s everything you need to know.
The Ping i530 irons were touted across the board as rocket ships, due to their strong lofts, hollow body design aiming to maximize distance for the amateur golfer. The 2024 model performed very well in our recent best irons test, so the i540s arrive with high expectations.
Glancing at the new technology involved in this 2026 players’ distance iron only accelerated the excitement.
The Ping i540s target amateurs looking for distance gains without sacrificing the sound and feel that other hollow body irons tend to.

Let’s run through the new technology in the Ping i540, and delve into why the innovation is so fascinating.
All roads lead to speed
The majority of the new technology introduced with the Ping i540 irons aims to push the boundaries of speed in this players distance iron. In the longer irons (4-7), weight savings allow tungsten to be placed inside the club along the sole, pushing the CG lower than the i530s, thus increasing ball speed, launch angle, and overall distance.
The weight savings come from the forged face being lighter and shallower – 9% lighter to be exact. This weight saving allows more flexing and creates metal-wood-like bending in the transition areas (sole and top), resulting in faster ball speeds and higher max height. This ensures that the increased distance doesn’t come with a sacrifice of ball control, with the descent angle staying at an optimal level.
inR-Air Technology
Ping’s key advancement for the i540 features a patent-pending piece of innovation, aiming to compliment the distance gains with premium sound and feel. Behind every face in the Ping i540 irons is an air bag, strategically positioned inside the cavity that filters the frequency – thus improving the sound and feel, without losing any distance.
Alongside the InR-Air Technology comes a new i-Beam, adding structural support to the 17-4 stainless steel body, contributing to the sound and feel. You may have heard of similar technology before, usually in metalwoods (such as Jailbreak in previous Callaway metalwoods). The i-Beam is a small beam extending across the cavity, adding to the structure and improving the feel for a hollow body iron.
“The i540 brings more control to a distance iron,” said Solheim. “It appeals to the golfer whose primary goal is more distance who still prefers the size and look of a players iron. In some cases, this player is looking to regain ball speed that they may have lost over time. Blade enthusiasts will appreciate the thin topline, narrow sole and shallow face height that define the iron’s clean, premium look. The i540 iron combines speed and precision into a very attractive design.”
