The CEO of a multinational clothing company and his wife have been issued a warning by the Quebec government that it intends to order them to restore the wetlands on property they own which is currently being developed as a golf course.

CBC News reports the private golf course began construction in Austin, Que. without municipal approval. The province’s agricultural land protection commission says farmland and a maple grove have been damaged by the development.

A provincial inspection of the property found about 2.4 hectares of a wooded peat bog was mostly cleared for the creation of an artificial lake.

Work to create the lake was in contravention of Quebec’s Environment Quality Act, the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks has stated.
