Arizona State’s Michael Mjaaseth (men’s) and Texas Tech’s Lauren Zaretsky (women’s) received Big 12 Golfer of the Week honors after posting top-five finishes against strong fields.
Mjaaseth turned in back-to-back scorecards of 63, on his way to a 19-under 197, marking the third-best 54-hole score relative to par in Arizona State history. The Oslo, Norway native helped the Sun Devils finish third in a field that featured eight top-25 teams at the Mauna Lani Resort in Waimea, Hawaii. It is his first Big 12 in-season award.
Zaretsky completed two top-five finishes in the period, at the Florida Atlantic Paradise Invitational and the Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate, finishing all six rounds in the two tournaments at par-or-better. In Boca Raton, Florida, the Toronto native tied for fifth, completing the 54-hole event at 3-under par. At Tucson Country Club, she shot 3-under, including a stretch of four birdies in six holes during her final-round 69 to tie for fifth in a field with six other ranked squads. It is her first career Big 12 periodic award.
