So I bought some irons of eBay, and after a few swings they started to rattled and I noticed some less than ideal work where the shaft meets the hosel. Just some glue residue and melted ferrules, but they are playable. Well at some point my 9 iron shook something loose inside the shaft. It is very loud, rattles and feels bad when I hit it. I removed my grip to try to shake it out but it wouldn’t come out, after a bunch of time and a really long drill bit, I found that there are pieces of wood inside the graphite shafts… is this a common thing?

Have I destroyed this shaft? Also, the fucking thing shaking around must be blocked by another piece of wood because even after removing this it isn’t coming out and looks like I need a heat gun and a shaft puller.

  1. Ghetto shaft weights I presume. Instead of brass or steel weights, they just glued a dowel. Actual shaft weights are flared to prevent it from travelling into the shaft.

I mean years ago tiger used to have his builder put a dowel in there to assist with dampening? Likely you didn’t do anything to break your shaft at all.

I could be wrong but I’m assuming whoever you bought this off was trying to replicate what Tiger does with a wooden dowel in his shaft to dampen vibrations.

Worth a google, there’s a couple articles and videos on the matter.

Could this be the secret Velocore? /s

  5. If the shaft was lengthened before, it was most likely done with a wooden dowel. It was probably cut off at the top or not fully drilled out.
