GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A developer hopes to build a miniature golf course on a four-acre lot at the corner of Mills Avenue and Ligon Street, less than two miles from downtown Greenville.
The proposed project has drawn mixed reactions from neighbors, with some expressing concerns about traffic and noise while others see potential economic benefits.
Traffic and parking concerns
Abigail and Andrew Reams, who live near the proposed site, worry about increased congestion on their residential road.
“There’s no stoplight at this intersection. There’s already crazy traffic going up Mills Avenue,” Abigail Reams said.
Andrew Reams said parking poses another challenge.
“A lot of it has to do with just the feasibility of parking in this neighborhood. It would just be a disruption,” he said.
Project details
Project plans show a one-story design that includes a parking lot, clubhouse, neighborhood coffee shop and a place to purchase alcohol.
The Reams, who want to raise children in the area, have concerns about noise and overcrowding.
“The thought of additional strangers, people who aren’t local to the neighborhood, being close by and having access to our house,” Abigail Reams said.
Support for development
Nearby neighbor William Butler thinks the development could revitalize the area.
“I think it’s pretty good. If they clean up and get rid of the invasive species—the kudzu, the Bradford pears—and beautify this spot along the creek, it would be a little more scenic,” Butler said.
Butler also sees potential economic benefits.
“It might be a good thing if more people are employed. There could be a lot of economic benefits,” he said.
Community involvement
The Reams said they would like to speak to the developer, Parks McLeod.
“As a general principle, I would love to be contacted and consulted. I definitely think it’s not a bad idea. I don’t know if this is the right place for it,” Andrew Reams said.
Butler said Brushy Creek could benefit from improvements.
“The big takeaway is the beautification of Brushy Creek,” he said.
Greenville’s Board of Zoning Appeals will hold a public hearing on the project Thursday at 4 p.m. at City Hall.
