Chris Gotterup came up on the rails to win the Phoenix Open after beating Hideki Matsuyama in a play-off.

Gotterup, who won in Hawaii earlier this year, produced a brilliant fourth-round 64, which included five birdies in the last six holes, to put himself in contention on 16 under in Arizona.

But the tournament was in Matsuyama’s hands as he had a putt on the 18th to win it. However, he did not make it and was soon in a watery grave on the extra hole.

That allowed Gotterup to seal victory in style, sinking a lengthy putt to card a birdie.

Scottie Scheffler also charged up the leaderboard with a final round of 64 to finish in a tie for third, alongside Akshay Bhatia, Si Woo Kim, Michael Thorbjornsen and Nicolai Hojgaard.
