The Majestic Pitch and Putt Club in Mallow closed its gates for the final time on Friday, February 6.

The 18-hole course which was located at Gouldshill was founded in 1971.

It quickly became an integral part of the local community in Mallow and throughout north Cork.

Speaking at the recent Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District meeting, Fine Gael councillor Liam Madden said the pitch and putt club will be a huge loss in the local hinterland.

“The announcement over Mallow Pitch and Putt Club was made in recent days. It was always kept so well, and everybody admired it. It was a huge amenity for Mallow. It will be a huge loss.

Cllr Madden recalled inter-firm competitions which attracted over 60 teams to the Majestic.

“I remember going back when there was an inter-firm competition held there and 60 teams competed. They were all from the Mallow area. It just showed the level of businesses around Mallow. A lot of things like that happened there and it brought huge enjoyment to so many people in the local community. What are the future plans from a Council perspective?”

Labour Party councillor Ronan Sheehan said there was great sadness in the locality when the news broke about the closure of the pitch and putt club.

“The Majestic Pitch and Putt Club has been fabulous for Mallow. Every single person of all age groups would have played there at some stage. It has been very sad over the last few weeks knowing that it is going. It was so well kept, and the same families kept it going over many years. It will be a ferocious loss.”

Aidan Creagh, Senior Executive Officer, Cork County Council said that in relation to the pitch and putt club, there is no contact with the local authority.

“In relation to zoning, it is not an amenity or green space zone in the development plan. There is no contact with ourselves. We don’t have anything in relation to the site.”
