Some of the damage to Laytown Pitch and Putt course which has occurred due to the recent bad weather and subsequent erosion
The bad weather and coastal erosion have taken away large parts of land at the coastal course
Laytown Pitch and Putt course has suffered significant damage in recent days due to the weather and subsequent coastal erosion.
Club Chair Mark Fay estimates that three-metre wide sections of the course have been lost to the sea as a result.
He told this afternoon’s ‘Late Lunch’ that fundraising efforts are now underway to try and save the course: “We had the storm before Christmas and we’ve had this storm now and since before Christmas, when we see the videos up, it has took three meters from the side and then it’s come into the court, we’ve approached the court now and it’s took a metre off the side of the course itself.
“So it’s come right up to our tee boxes and we’re devastated with it and unfortunately the council had a meeting yesterday and no action is going to be taken. We’ve to let it go.”
Mark said that fundraising efforts are underway to try and raise money to protect the course and ultimately the club: “We’re closed now to the public unfortunately for a couple of weeks. We’ve set up a GoFundMe page where we have to move and reinstate our fence. We don’t have a fence left to be honest, the tide has completely destroyed it, so this is the path we’re now having to take.
“So we’ve been told to move our fence in and lose more ground and the tide will then next year come back into that fence again anyway. Unfortunately this is what we’re battling with.”
