WAIMEA, Hawaii — The No. 16 Texas Tech men’s golf team jumped out to a blistering start Thursday, shooting 21-under-par behind four subpar counting scores in the opening round at Mauna Lani’s North Course.

The Red Raiders sit tied for fourth in the 20-team field. Despite the strong start, the Red Raiders are 11 shots back of first-round leader No. 5 Auburn.

Texas Tech’s four counting scores came from Adam Bresnu (7-under 65), Connor Graham (6-under 66), Ben Gregg (4-under 68) and Tim Wiedemeyer (3-under 69), placing all four inside the top 30 individually among the 122-player field.

Bresnu leads the Red Raiders in a tie for ninth at 7-under and is four shots off the lead, held by Pepperdine’s Mahanth Chirravuri, who fired an 11-under 61. Graham is tied for 18th, one stroke behind Bresnu and five shots off the pace.

The first-round course average was 70.08, with 19 of the 20 teams finishing under par. Ideal island conditions — including minimal wind, sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s — contributed to low scoring, along with yardages set at 6,913 yards.

The second round will begin on Friday with a 7:30 a.m. HT (11:30 a.m. CT) shotgun start. The final round is set for Saturday.
