It’s been a busy offseason for LIV Golf. The league lost some big-named players, gained some others who aren’t as well-known, was awarded world rankings points, yet still complained about it. It’s also now playing 72 holes, despite that fact that the name LIV is the roman numeral for 54.
Other than that.
The league is starting in Saudi Arabia and for the second consecutive year it will playing at night. The field is now up to 57 players, consisting of four players on each of 13 teams and five wild card additions. They’ll be playing for $30 million with the individual winner taking home $4 million and the winning team earning $3 million. For the first time in league history all 13 teams will earn money, instead of only the top three like in previous years.
Adrian Meronk is the defending champion, but most eyes, as will be the case all year, will be on Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, the league’s two biggest stars, especially since Brooks Koepka went back to the PGA Tour and Patrick Reed announced he’s playing the DP World Tour before joining the PGA Tour in the fall.
Ten players are making their LIV Golf debuts as full-time members: Thomas Detry, Victor Perez, Michael La Sasso, Ben An, Minkyu Kim, Younghan Song, Elvis Smylie, Yosuke Asaji, Bjorn Hellgren and Richard Lee. The Iron Heads are now called Korean Golf Club and Stinger GC is now called the Southern Guards. Ollie Schniederjans will start for Phil Mickelson and Ben Schmidt will start for Lee Westwood.
Here’s the rundown of what each player will earn this week in Saudi Arabia. Check back here early Sunday morning for updates when play is complete.
