Cyclones women’s golf has wrapped up their first event of the spring season in Puerto Rico, finishing 15th overall at 15 over par.
Iowa State teed off in round one at 7:30 a.m. local time Sunday morning from holes four through seven, as well as sophomore Isabella Yan, who started at hole 15A.
The first round ended decently for Iowa State, with the Cyclones going a stroke under par, tied for 10th with the hosts, the Purdue Boilermakers.
Senior Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn led the way through the first round, closing at -4 and claiming birdies on five holes, four of which came on the front nine.
The impressive first round for Chul-Ak-Sorn tied her for fourth on the individual table alongside five other golfers.
The rest of the Cyclones golfed well. Sophomore Nichakorn Pinprayoon ended round No. 1 two under par, and Yan golfed one under par as well.
Round two started at 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday morning. Iowa State played on the same set of holes from before.
In the second round, the Cyclones were tied 12th and tied with the Iowa Hawkeyes with a team score of three over par.
Even though Iowa State was in the lower half of the table, Chul-Ak-Sorn’s impressive Sunday continued. Three under par in the second round gave her a total score of seven under, which put her in an impressive third place on the individual table.
She sat behind the leader, junior Abbey Schutte from the Arkansas Razorbacks, who was -12, and second place, junior Reagan Southerland from the North Carolina Tar Heels, who sat at -11.
The only other golfer for the Cyclones not to go over par in round two was Alexandra Vidal Rivera, who shot even on the par-72 course.
Finally, the third and final round would begin, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. local time Monday morning. Rio Grande would see light rain Monday, which seemed to come as a struggle for the Cyclones.
The final round ended in Iowa State golfing +11 as a team, and no one individually went under par. That put the Cyclones at +14 across the whole event, falling from their first day, which ended just three over par.
The Cyclones’ poor Monday resulted in them falling down the table, from 12th to 15th out of the 18 teams. This put them behind 13th-place Minnesota and UNC Wilmington, who were tied at +10 and above 16th-placed Michigan, which went +23.
Chul-Ak-Sorn, who was third, individually golfed four over par on Monday, which gave her a total individual score of minus three, making her fall from third to 15th on the individual leaderboard. This 15th place was still the best individual result for Iowa State
The best scorer for the final round was Vidal Rivera, who golfed one over par, which tied her as the 30th best score on Monday.
Other significant scores from the final round were Pinprayoon, who went four over par with three bogeys and two double bogeys alongside three birdies. Keeley Marx and Yan tied for the second-best scores for the Cyclones, both going plus two on the event.
Arkansas maintained the lead they closed Sunday off with to win the event, going -23, ahead of Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, who tied for second at -17.
For the individual table, there was a three-way tie for first among Southerland of North Carolina, Jiarui Chen of Kansas State and Schutte of Arkansas.
The next event for the Iowa State Women’s Golf team will be the Texas Golf Throwdown hosted by Sam Houston State. The event will be in Houston, Texas, and will run on Feb. 16 and 17.
