Scottie Scheffler is picking up right where he left off.

The 2026 PGA Tour season opens, and once again, the story starts with Scottie Scheffler standing alone at the top. He wins the first event of the year in convincing fashion — even with a late double bogey — reinforcing a reality the rest of the field is already living with: when Scottie shows up, everyone else is playing for second.

Trey Wingo breaks down why this win matters beyond the trophy. It’s not just about starting the year 1-0 — it’s about what Scottie Scheffler’s body of work now looks like in historical context. Before turning 30, Scheffler has entered a category occupied by only two names in the modern era: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Twenty PGA Tour wins. Four major championships. Lifetime Tour membership secured.

But the most interesting part of Scottie’s run isn’t how fast it started — it’s how sustainable it looks.

After going winless in his first 70 PGA Tour starts, Scheffler has now won 20 times over his next 81 starts, including 14 wins in his last 35 events. That’s a winning rate that rivals the most dominant stretches the sport has ever seen. And unlike Tiger Woods’ early career, Scottie’s swing is less violent, his off-course life more grounded, and his approach to the game noticeably different.

This video looks at:
– Why Scottie Scheffler’s opening-week win sets the tone for the entire season
– How his statistical profile compares to Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus at the same stage
– Why the upcoming PGA Tour schedule changes make 2026 a uniquely important season
– What separates Scottie’s dominance from past greats — and why that may matter long-term
– A realistic over/under for Scheffler’s wins this season based on historical data

As the PGA Tour prepares for structural changes in the coming years, this may be the final season with a full slate of events — and Scottie Scheffler is positioned to take full advantage. The numbers are historic. The consistency is real. And the question isn’t whether Scottie is the best player in the world — it’s how far this run can go.

New year. Same Scottie.

  1. I will continue to root for Scottie. He is such a great representation of the sport and great role model.

Even though I was a young adult when Tiger was dominating, I took it for granted and did not appreciate what I was watching.

Now I am older I can appreciate what Scottie is doing so much more.

His devotion to family and faith might be the difference for Scottie in his 30s, I think it is up to Scottie. If he continues to work at his game and stays hungry.

Tiger had his issues, his personal vices, his injuries which likely led to his addiction issues that sidetracked his career.

So long Scottie stays hungry to win I think in a decade we could see him close in or even surpass Tiger's major win count before he turns 40.

  2. Tiger in his prime vs Scottie in his prime, it would be hard to bet against Tiger. Scottie’s game, life, and swing seem more stable and repeatable long-term. It will be fun to see how this whole thing plays out in about 10 years.

  3. Tiger was dominant over a different skill level of pros on the tour
New development of irons drivers wedges
The pga tried very hard to Tiger proof courses
Scottie’s game is very impressive against a skill level of golfers & a game that is competitive to a tiger construct
    My opinion

  4. Scottie is hammering Superstars. Tiger was hammering country club guys who couldn't find the weight room with a map.

  5. At this point he is the best golfer I have ever seen. I saw Jack from 1980 or so on, and all of Tiger, so I missed prime Jack Nicklaus. Scottie Scheffler is arguably the best "golfer" ever. He does stupid stuff….a lot. Remember the 2023 US Open in Los Angeles. On 18th hole in 3rd round….essentially cannot win the tournament, as he was about 6 back. No big deal…..holes out from 180 plus yards with long iron….all of the sudden he has a chance…didn't win, but he was 3rd choice going into Sunday instead of about 10th choice. How about when he won his first Masters in 2022. Rough first two holes…..Cam Smith catches him…..3rd hole Cam and Scottie are both down in the gulley on the drivable par 4 with their tee shots. Cam Smith flubs his and it rolls back to him, and Scottie holes out with the blind uphill approach. Not sure who hit first, but he reestablished control and then never really was threatened.

In big tourneys, including majors, when someone makes a move, or when Scottie stumbles, the next hole, usually a demanding one, Scottie hits a long iron to practically gimme range, and he does this nonstop throughout the year. Sure, Tiger did the same thing, but Tiger is kind of in his own category. I put Scottie over Jack Nicklaus when the dust settles, because Scottie is always right there, even in the majors, even when playing not his best golf. I would take Scottie Scheffler right now against prime Jack or Tiger, in an 18 hole match to live or die. I would be much more comfortable needing Scottie Scheffler to win that 18 hole match if my life depended on it. He's the best ever, but of course will need to keep playing to get the records.

  6. Another, pardon my French, tres bien take, Trey.
As long as Scott stays out of pancake and waffle restaurants, the sky is the limit for him!

  7. Huge Scheffler fan here , but I think he's too far back to catch Tiger , that said , I hope he keeps winning and winning , love his unique game .
