Charles Barkley once learned the hard way that trash-talking Tiger Woods on the golf course can come at a steep price, especially when confidence turns into instant regret.

Recounted years later, the story resurfaced in 2020 as a cautionary tale about poking the most competitive golfer of his generation.

Former NFL player Roy Green recalled the moment Barkley talked himself into a dangerous wager with Woods.

“We get there, and Charles goes, ‘I think I’m gonna whoop some a__ this time.’ I said, ‘Look, man, I just want to know the bet, Chucky, ’cause I’m betting for Tiger.’ Charles says, ‘OK, I’m gonna take Tiger five a side, but Tiger’s gotta give me one a hole and two on par 5s,’” Green said.

“I’m like, ‘S___ yeah, I’ll take it, too,’” he added.

At the time, Barkley believed the handicap was generous enough to protect him. It was a miscalculation that would not take long to unravel once the competitive switch flipped.

Why calling Tiger Woods “overrated” proved costly

According to Green, the turning point came almost immediately. Woods mishit his opening shot, prompting Barkley to deliver a fatal line of trash talk, calling him “a f______ overrated guy.”

What followed was swift and ruthless.

Green revealed: “After that hole, Tiger birdied five straight. I said, ‘Chucky, you can buy out right now, or we can play the back too.’ He said, ‘I’ll buy out the bet.’”

The message was clear. Woods’ response came not through words, but through precision and dominance, the kind that defined his career at its peak.

Shared in 2020, the story carried a reflective tone rather than mockery. It highlighted Woods’ relentless competitiveness and Barkley’s willingness to laugh at himself years later, acknowledging that some lessons in golf, and life, are best learned the expensive way.
