Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France stamped themselves as Olympic contenders on Saturday, capturing their first European ice dance title with a commanding performance before the Games.

In just their fourth international appearance since teaming up last March, the duo delivered a breathtaking lyrical free dance to the soundtrack from “The Whale” for a season’s best score of 135.50 points that left little doubt they will be in the hunt for gold next month.

Fournier Beaudry, a Montreal native who received French citizenship in November, and Cizeron, the reigning Olympic champion with longtime previous partner Gabriella Papadakis, scored 222.43 total points.

  1. The elements are strong, but the partner will inevitably be compared to Gabriella Papadakis — and in softness, elegance, and refinement she clearly loses. This kind of natural flexibility and delicacy is something you either have or don’t have and cannot be developed, so to avoid constant comparison the pair needs a completely different movement style, not a lyrical or gentle one where she simply cannot win.

  2. I was there and it was absolute magic. The base of the music vibrates through your body and their body movements convey so much emotion, it’s mesmerising. You forget how to breathe! This is by far and above the best free dance I have seen in many years. Like the commentators said, it was an honour and a privilege to see them skate!

  3. What would actually work (to be honest):
For this partner, it would work much better to have:
    a faster tempo
    more rhythmic dances
    emphasis on legs and edges
    fewer sustained pauses
less “inner silence” and more structure
    In other words:
    not the Papadakis style,
but a new duo — a new dramaturgy.

  4. Honestly, without the previous era with Papadakis, I probably wouldn’t have paid much attention to this duo at all. With the new partner, it feels like just another pair — the past still carries more weight than what we see on the ice today.

  7. Such a fantastic, incredible performance 👏👏👏 Gave me echoes of the brilliance of Torvill and Dean back in the day 🙏🙏🙏 really amazing 😊 congratulations 🙌 this is the start of an magnificent era in Ice Dance 😊

  8. Once again, and whatever the partner, Cizeron delivers a wonderful skating dance! The duet is incredible compared to the others, so smooth and artistical. Never see such a performance before. Thanks a lot!

  10. THIS is what ice-dancing shall be. Very smooth movements, like waves, very organic, absolutly awesome!
Beside the very high skilled amazing skating of both – the choreographer did a very very fantastic job indeed, as this choreo is what ice dance is all about – not even going for "big" lifts but for stunningly artistic ones – a piece of art is the result shown by these very great two, full of strenght, grace, expression – I feel honoured to have watched this😍💜🤩👍❄️❄️🔥💙💗✨️✨️✨️

  11. I never get tired of watching this program.
I don’t watch sports—let alone figure skating—but here we’re dealing with a truly remarkable artistic performance.
The music is deeply moving, the choreography is intelligent, the technique is so outstanding it becomes invisible, and the whole thing is so pure and timeless you almost wish the audience would fall silent—just as the commentators were wise enough to do.
