The Arccos Smart Laser is officially here, and it claims to be the first AI-powered rangefinder that actually “thinks” rather than just zapping flags. But is it a game-changer or just another subscription-based gadget?
In this video, I take the Arccos Smart Laser out to the windy links of Saunton Golf Club to see if its AI-powered “Plays Like” distances actually work in the real world. We’ll unbox the device, dive into the seamless setup, and test the “Gust Number” feature that promised to change my club selection on a tricky par 3.
What you’ll learn in this review:
The Killer Feature: How the AI “Plays Like” distance (adjusting for wind, slope, and altitude) compares to a standard laser.
Performance Tracking: How zapping the pin automatically updates your Arccos app for perfect putting and approach stats.
The “Controversial” Pricing: We discuss the subscription model and whether a rangefinder that requires an active Arccos membership is worth it for you.
Build & Optics: A look at the 7.1oz build, MagLock technology, and the ultra-clear OLED display.
Is this the future of golf tech or a bridge too far with subscriptions? Let’s find out.

What range finder is in your golf bag right now golfers?
No way would i pay a yearly subscription for a range finder to work
Mo out here drooling…
Mark, good analysis as usual. I am an Arccos user for the past few years and I get a lot out of the app. The weather (wind) adjustments are the best feature, features that my friends with slope adjustment lasers just don’t have access to on the course. That said, the annual subscription fee for the app has climbed over time and is now rather expensive for my tastes. The data collected is excellent and very useful, including club distances and metrics that would be difficult to track by hand. I am thinking about dropping the app due to cost, I feel I have learned what I can and what to work on the improve. My one pushback on this new laser device is I can use my existing inexpensive laser gun and set the pin in the app and get the same data. It’s not automated but it works for me. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I had an Arccos subscription but canceled it because there are others like Shotscope that don't have a subscription. So no I would not get this range finder.
Not only does this have to go with your arccos sub but you need a separate sub for the range finder. Which is the kicker imo
I have this range finder. Love it as a dedicated Arccos user.
I have Arccos and Tesla. Subscription doesn’t scare me. Only issue is whether it is better than other range finders. As someone that has the Arccos kool-aid intravenously in myx blood, it is way better than any other range finders.
Battery v USB is a non issue. Pros and cons both ways.
Great video.
Only probkem is, you have to pay extra for most if not all products. Its a no from me.
Shot scope dont rip you off
I was wondering when this whole concept was going to hit your channel. So I believe this is the first of the "fruit" of Edoardo Molinari's union with Arccos? Just before this past Ryder Cup there was a short documentary video about his engineering data efforts in golf, working with the past few Ryder Cup Europe teams and various tour pros. The TL;DR is he's essentially come up with various formulas and algorithms that analyze a players game and will tell that player exactly how to play any course! Meaning once he's accrued enough playing data on a player, his system will tell that player where to put the ball for each shot on each hole of any course!
For me personally, this is a step too far. While I can see this new Arccos laser as a training aid to get a feel for wind and strategy, beyond that I feel it is cheating and against the spirit of any sport. Golf is a game of mental and physical skill (like any sport). Your overall skill as a player is applying your knowledge and understanding of the game to the situation, making strategic choices, and then having the physical skill to execute those choices. If a product eliminates, almost entirely, the mental side of the game, how is that not cheating and against the spirit of what sports are? And yes I get there's a balance as one can make this argument against range finders in general, but at least the reason they are allowed is to solve a pace of play problem (there was already distance finding mechanisms built into the sport, so this isn't making a decision for the player).
Also just to note, this exact system is what Molinari has used with the past few Ryder Cups for team Europe! It tells each player where to aim and what ideal position to get into for every shot! They formulate the plan ahead of time and it's up to them to go physically execute. So this is already something that affects the professional side of the sport, having an algorithm making decisions for the player.
