Tom Watson explains the key elements of the perfect takeaway and backswing in his excelling golf instruction video.
The takeaway is the most important part of the golf swing. It is only 2 feet long but Arnold Palmer calls it the most important 2 feet of the golf swing.
I personally have learned this lesson well in the past few years and it has transformed my golf game. The takeaway is easily the most important part of the golf swing. I can’t explain why but after a good fundamental takeaway the rest of the swing just seems to fall into place.

IF YOU ARE STILL READING:
Tom explains how the club and arms have to move back as one unit for the first few feet of the swing. If you break your wrists or go outside or inside on the takeaway you are dead unless you can create a consistent rerouting of the the golf club back to the ball.
One concept Watson expands upon that I personally found key is the maintaining of the wrist angle on the takeaway. My tendency was actually to let the wrist angle increase a bit on takeaway and then later on hinge. It just messed up my swing.
Maintaining the wrist angle and moving the wrists and club back in one unit will fix many of your golf flaws in a very simple way. I hope this helps.

  1. This is probably the best swing fix video I've seen. Butt to the target line then butt to the target line is probably the easiest way to go (for most of us hackers). It certainly helps one to find the correct clubhead rotation through the ball. Also the correct swing plane (as long as you dont reverse pivot). Nice one Tom!

  2. A good take-away is very hard to do. All his life. Nicklaus called it the most important part of the swing. Why is it so hard ? Because we have all done it wrong all of our lives. A swing is not arms and shoulders. It is upper body turn. And you can only do that in the first two inches or so of take-away. Once past there you are screwed with arms and shoulders. Touring pros today are all getting really short. That is why. It removes all the timing and carries to the golf course. I just noticed today how short Sevy was. He was all upper body turn. So was Nicklaus in his later years. He hardly even took the club back. You will be amazed at how much power is still there.

  3. If your left hand starts your back swing, how are you starting your downswing in terms of what your feeling is with your hands? Do you feel that your left hand is still in charge or both hands are doing the same amount of work? Great tuition here, best I've ever seen.

  4. Why is this YouTuber stealing Tom Watson’s instruction and benefiting from it on his channel. THAT IS UNETHICAL, call it what it is 👎👎👎

  5. Excellent discussion of the proper backswing. I noticed that his left elbow has just a very slight bend in it at the top. He doesn't keep it ramrod stiff like some players. Look at videos taken of Mickey Wright and Jack Nicklaus and see how high they lift their left heels. You don't see that from a lot of golfers today. We less-flexible golfers should copy this as it helps increase our arcs for more distance and is easier on our backs.

  6. This is a fantastic piece of advice- the start of – or take back – part of the swing – is vital – get this move right and the swing can create its own domino effect- get the start wrong and the rest of the swing becomes manipulation of hands – and that will not last for too long – but if you think this first move is easy – I can assure you it is not –

  7. El
Takeaway no es ni cerca lo más importante. Por ello vemos jugadores buenos haciéndolo de manera diferente . Lo único importante en un swing de golf es el impacto y las milésimas de segundo previas . Furik, wolff y tiger tienen takeaway totalmente diferentes . Su posicion al impacto es casi idéntica .

  8. Good lesson for people with flaws but don't let that stop you from swinging your own swing as long as your impact position is correct. Many pros don't have a text book takeaway like this.
