Is the PXG 0311 GEN8 the best iron lineup PXG have ever made?
You never quite know what you’re going to get with PXG, and that’s part of what makes their launches so interesting. They don’t follow traditional product cycles, they don’t drip-feed teasers for months, and they certainly don’t wait around for “launch season.”
PXG have always written their own rules, and since bursting onto the scene in 2015 with the original GEN1 irons the brand have made a habit of disrupting the iron market rather than following suit.
Those first 0311 irons genuinely changed the market. The hollow-body construction filled with polymer and “look like a blade, play like a cavity back” concept was bold at the time, but is a design now used by almost every other brand. PXG didn’t just follow a trend; they helped create it.
Now, more than a decade on, PXG arrives at the 0311 GEN8 irons, and it feels like the most complete and considered iron lineup they’ve produced to date. While the performance and looks of last year’s GEN7 launch underwhelmed, whispers around GEN8 meant expectations were high, and thankfully, PXG have delivered meaningful improvements where it matters most. The addition of a new T model for highly skilled players, alongside the P and XP heads, is a significant step forward, broadening the appeal of the 0311 family and making it suitable for everyone, from tour-level to high-handicap golfers.
What’s new in the PXG 0311 GEN8 irons?
The combination of technologies in GEN8 is designed to allow the face to flex deeper into the polymer at impact, increasing ball speed while aiming to maintain soft feel and consistent launch, and increase forgiveness.
Dual Perimeter Weighting
The headline upgrade across the GEN8 lineup is PXG’s new Dual Perimeter Weighting System, which shifts approximately 11 grams from the centre of the clubhead to the perimeter. The result is an impressive increase in MOI (forgiveness) across all models compared to GEN7, without sacrificing feel or control.
0311 XP: +6% MOI
0311 P: +4% MOI
0311 T: +17% MOI
That last number is the standout. A 17% increase in MOI in a tour-style iron is significant and helps explain why the T model feels noticeably more stable than previous PXG “better player” offerings.
What makes this system particularly clever is that it also allows fitters to influence start line and face-to-path before touching lie angle. Player testing showed that 83% of golfers could feel the difference between weight configurations, and 100% experienced a measurable change in face-to-path at impact.
In short, it’s a fitting tool that actually works, not just a marketing feature.
QuantumCOR & Deep Core Recoil
At the heart of every GEN8 iron is PXG’s QuantumCOR polymer, their fastest, softest, and most resilient internal material to date. GEN8 irons are built right up to the USGA COR limit, delivering maximum ball speed without sacrificing launch or spin consistency.
That polymer works in tandem with Deep Core Recoil Technology, which increases the space behind the face, allowing it to flex deeper into the polymer at impact. The result is faster ball speeds, improved launch, and an impressively soft feel, particularly noticeable on strikes low on the face.
This isn’t just theoretical either. Across the XP, P, and T models, GEN8 shows improved ball-speed retention, tighter dispersion, and more consistent carry distances compared to previous generations.
Why the GEN8 irons feel different
GEN8 irons are built using a 5X forged 8620 carbon steel body, an expensive and complex process that produces a tighter grain structure and better feel than casting. Each head is then finished with robotic polishing to ensure consistent sole geometry, topline shaping, and face perimeter accuracy from club to club.
Internal tungsten weighting (15g in XP, 25g in P, and 20g in T) helps counteract hosel mass and centers the CG, further boosting forgiveness without altering shape. Add in PXG’s ultra-thin maraging steel face and Power Channel Technology, and you have an iron that blends speed, stability, and feel exceptionally well.
PXG’s most complete iron lineup yet
The PXG 0311 GEN8 irons feel like the culmination of everything the brand have learned over the last decade. Better shaping, smarter weighting, improved forgiveness, and clearer player targeting make this the strongest 0311 lineup to date.
The addition of the 0311 T is the real win here. It finally gives better players a tour-inspired option that doesn’t feel compromised, while the P and XP models continue to offer excellent performance for golfers who want more help.
PXG may have disrupted the iron market back in 2015, but with GEN8, they’ve proven they’re just as good at refining it.
