I love playing golf but its so corny as someone who didnt grow up with it.
It is likely a practical choice. I play (and walk) more than 100 rounds a year, and my golf shoes are the most comfortable footwear I own. My feet are very accustomed to them from hours of walking on the course. I also have several pairs that look much like regular trainers and have no spikes at all. I have worn them to golf tournaments before without a second thought.
Another factor people may overlook is that golfers often travel to attend these events, and golfers being golfers, we usually bring our clubs and play in the area while we are there. In that context, packing one pair of shoes that works for watching golf and playing golf makes far more sense than bringing separate walking shoes and golf shoes.
