The Top 5 BUDGET Irons Of 2025 – These Are KILLING The Big Brands!?

2025 has been a spectacular year for new golf club releases. However, it’s also been a very, very, very expensive year for golf club releases. So, today I have what I think are the top five budget options for golfers in 2025. When I say budget, this is a really interesting debate because I’m not talking about cheap I’m talking about good golf clubs that can help you reach your goals without breaking the bank. So, first of all, don’t no guys, we’re not going to give them all away. We’re going to go one by one. But guys, what would your top five irons of the year be? Both on a budget, but also potentially if you’re going to go and spend that big money. Because when I did the big money video, the comment section went wild for more budget alternatives. So, the first one I want to talk about is a club that I’ve really, really enjoyed and people potentially haven’t heard of too much. So at number five, it is an 8 iron, but it is of course the H burley series CB irons. Now, we tested the H series. We have the CBS, we have the MBs, and to be honest, we also had I can’t remember what they’re called, but the hollow bodied ones. The hollow body ones for me were really, really good. But these are that nice middle ground of a forged element. You can see they look very much like a ping iron for me. I think looking down at them, they feel really, really soft. They’ve got a lovely kind of nice thick sole on there as well. And they’ve even even buffered away the leading edge so you can get really nice turf interaction. Not that we get to hit off turf at this time of year here in the UK at most places unfortunately which is really annoying but also that element of forging does make them sound fantastic. So, with premium components in them, such as a KBS120 shaft, the one thing that lets them down a little bit, and I spoke to the guys at H about this, and they’re going to work on it, is I think the grips are a little bit naff like it looks like a multi- compound, but it’s not a multicompound. I think for the sake of a couple of quid a club, I would just stick a Golf Pride or a Lampkin or something like that on. That’s where the guys at Tacomao and other brands do really, really well by giving you full premium components. But the HR a fantastic option and I think they’ve done really really well to try and break into that market especially being based in Australia which is a rather difficult place to get things from. And you can see that it’s a really nice flighted club and that’s actually worked really really well into the wind. I can’t believe that that’s actually got all the way up there to that back flag. Guys, what do you think to the H Burley series CBS? Could you see yourself putting them in the bag for 2026? You can go direct. They’re obviously DTOC. You can’t get fitted for them, but most of the clubs in this video are DTOC and that’s how a lot of these brands do keep budgets down for people. I’ve duffed that one and that’s still going really well. What do we think is at number four? Gaz, what would you have? We’ve got a really special guest on the channel today as well. We’ve got Gaz. Gaz. How you doing, mate? I’m good. Thanks. And I’ve tried this one and in terms of like forge clubs, it’s such a nice forge club, you know, like the face on it. I’ll just if you can zoom in on that, but it really does remind me like a tight list, you know, like a CB how you’ve got that sort of nice sort of shiny finish here, then a dull face. It’s just so soft and bagel. They are really good. So guys, I’ve got four more in the bag there. I’m going to let you choose what’s in it. Number four. Wow. Um Oh, I’ve tried I’ve tried one of these. I’m gonna have to I could be guilty because I’ve not tried them, but I’m gonna say that one, the Ram. Yeah. Um I’ve never tried one. A very very similar option and for me a club again which just promotes really good value. We’ll put you know we’ll link all these in the description below if people want to go and have a look at them. I think DTC brands should be looking at potentially offering like go and buy an eight iron for cheap. Yeah. And like if you like it then we’ll you keep the eight iron and you buy the rest of the set or something like that. So you can try them and there’s no real obligation. Like if you spent 40 50 quid on eight iron, yeah, you don’t then mind. Oh, you know what? It’s not for me. I’ll try something else. That reminds me of like a magazine when back in the day you used to buy one thing. I can’t remember what it were now. I remember as a kid. So it’s like a car thing, isn’t it? You used to buy you’d buy the chassis and then everything else would be like really expensive. You could do it week by week, couldn’t you? To build some of it, like build a set. Right guys, send us a couple in then with that ram. Well, that’s a brilliant idea. just even offer it at like trade price to get someone get them into it. Get them into the brand. Yeah, this is a lovely I can’t believe I’ve got a Ram club in my hand. Yeah, look at this down at the bowl. It really is. It looks like a PXG. I think last time I’ve tried ram, it would well or sold ram. It were just beginner stuff. It were rush, weren’t it? It were rubbish. Funny enough as well, I was going to go ram at number four and we haven’t like pre-done this. So, that’s a really nice really nice way to go about it. Really difficult shot this with the wind into off left. Oh, it’s not difficult for Gaz now though. Look at that for a shot. I cannot believe this is fading back off the wind. Center of the green. Lovely shot. Fantastic. Go on. Go one more. Have you got one in your pocket? Got another one in me bag because for me I always think when you are looking at a club like this and this kind of value if you enjoy hitting it and all these clubs perform for numbers. I’ve tested them all for numbers and they’re all there or thereabouts. There’s only so much technology you can put in a forge CB head. And if they do have premium shafts, again, we look at this Ram Gaz and it’s got that KBS uh 120 shafting. What grips has it got on? It’s just a sort of nondiscript. So, again, I think that’s where you could maybe start to look at giving people more value. But just look at that again. I tell you what, I’ve that I’ve pured that. That felt amazing. I cannot believe it’s stamp. It’s got RAM on it. It don’t get any better than that last shot. No, it literally doesn’t. straight at it. That could be an allin-one. Oh, guys. Honestly, that has surprised me that. Yeah. And this is why I want to do this video cuz I think we’ll surprise a lot of people. And they’re only four and five, guys. Top three coming up. We’re going to move location. We’re going to keep moving because it’s freezing. What do you think are in the top three? Right. Number three. Now, this is a very, very difficult shot to play because it’s only 140 yards. downwind and we have a front flag. But the reason why I think these are so good is the versatility element of them. Guys, these are the links. They’re very, very similar to the Ram actually, aren’t they? Yeah. But they’re they’re actually classed as an MV, but obviously they’ve got that lovely like diamond cut CV element. They look very similar, I think, to the older tailormaides, like the old TPS kind of thing. So, let’s have a go and see just what we can do here. And again, these are DTC. again like these KBS I think KBS must be like the best the best customer for DTC brands because they obviously give them at a good price so they can keep those margins down and they’re they’re a fantastic shaft I went and got fitted the other day for the new I don’t think I can tell you about so you might have to bleep that out big dog but for me so Bobby’s not even doing the editing on this Jamie is big dog give yourself a pat on the back because you’ve been doing really well but I went and got fitted for like I head and I just said, “Oh, KBS120. We started there. We finished there cuz it’s such a good shaft.” And I think it’s overlooked that people can get really, really good um affordable shafts. You need to get up there to get it. Are we all right? I might have to. Yeah. I’ve just noticed what grip comes on them as well. What is it? Lampin. Lampin, mate. Yeah. So, did you know Here’s one for everybody as well. Superstroke bought Lankin. I did know about that actually. Did you? I I had no idea until the other day. Right. Can we chip one in? Oh, be good. Come on, wind. Hit it. Look at this, guys. Look at this. That’s as good as it gets. I was going to ask Gaz. I tell you, I’m going to another one just for pure fun and entertainment, but then I want Gaz to have a go because yes, it’s all good and well having an iron that goes a million miles and is forgiven. But my argument here is not all golfers who want budget clubs are beginner golfers or high handicap golfers. There’s plenty of golfers out there who are highly skilled, low handicap players, want a forge set of irons, and don’t want to spend £1,500. And I think this is where a lot of these companies are starting to do absolute bits in the industry. Another one the same. Like I I know I can hit that like 150 155 yards, but I also know that I can flight it down and play a nice shot into a really tight into the wind difficult par three. Go on guys, have a go. Highest I’ve ever jumped. I’m You know what? I’m loving sharing my opinion on these brands because I’ve seen obviously they come back into the market after you know a few Have you noticed something I’ve noticed? They’re all coming into DTC market. Not only that, but it’s all brands that we grew up with. That’s what I mean. And I think we share a wrong opinion of them. Yeah. You know, and I think people our age group will think of RAM and they’ll think of links and they’ll overlook it. Yeah. And you know, it’s just nice to be able to hit one and share an opinion because Yeah. I mean, I I knew RAM as being more package equipment stuff and sort of links. But after that last shot I hit with that ram, could definitely recommend them. That’s a bad one. Not for everyone, mate. Are they? I think that’s more end user. Right. Flag high. He’s definitely not the club. Just trying to play a little chippy one. This one. Go on then. Scoot over. Oh, splash in the bunker. It’s not my stock shot that. And that is number three. What do we think is in that bag at numbers two and one? Okay, so we’ve had some notable names so far in five, four, and three. What’s coming in number two? And of course, the coveted number one best budget iron of 2025. Well, this could easily be number one. However, it’s not quite as cheap as the other ones, but performance-wise, it really does work outstandingly well. Now, I went and got fitted for these out in Munich, Germany at the HIO Institute all-in-one, and it was really, really good. So, you can get fitted for these depending on your location, and of course, you can order lots and lots of different specs on the Vice website. So, really, really good. Again, nice shafts. These are Vice’s own shafts and own grips, but they are designed to work well with the heads. So, that’s kind of worth noting. If these were £100 cheaper, I’d have them in at number one. The reason why I want them in here is because they’re a hollow bodied design, almost bladelike, but there is tech in there to help you. However, they still got the forge face, so you still get the feel and you still have lots and lots of workability and versatility and everything like that. So, you kind of get the best of all worlds really. I do like the blade length. It’s a little bit longer than what you would anticipate from a standard blade. And all the different options you can choose from. Really do put these almost in a league of their own when it comes to being able to chop and change and make lots and lots of different options with them. Now, what you know, before we do that, guys, I’m going to put that back so I don’t forget exactly where it’s gone. Our guest on the channel today, Gaz, has said he wants a recount, haven’t you, Gaz? So we’ll discuss that after this club which is in at number one. And also we’ll put this in the in the beginning of the video Jam if they edit because it gets people kind of transfixed on what’s going to happen. Kind of like you got a recount. Well I’ve not tested some of them have I? So I was making a bit of a calculate decision but before we have the recount number one everyone knows what these are. These are my fitted Tacoma 301 irons. Now the reason why I’ve gone for these now this obviously isn’t a setup that you would get off the Tacoma website. I went and got these fitted at SGT and they’ve performed outrageously well for me for the last two years. I actually had the standard KBS shafts in for about 8 to 10 months and then decided to go and get a proper fit in. Have I seen a huge difference? Probably not to be honest. But again, those standard KBS shafts are really, really good. These are of course the next 100 models. These are the copper model. There were about 100 sets of these. I think they look really, really good in industrial, but the copper versions don’t age as quickly as this. So make of that what you will. The reason why these are number one is because these were the first to do it. Like I always say that the tailor made P790 is the godfather of hollow bodied forgiving irons because they started it. They’re perfecting it and they’re making the best ones currently. I think that’s the case with Tacoma and with kind of Dc budget irons. They started it. They were the first ones. I was one of the first people to review the Tacoma 101’s and then obviously things skyrocketed and now they’ve got the Brian Bros and Grant Horvat and whoever else on their books. But for me, they’re still that little old company from Finland. A very family feel to them. They’re very proud of what they’re doing. I know they are. And I think they’ve done an exceptional job so far, especially with the irons. So, they’re in at number one. Look at that, guys. Like, this is why that’s that sounded phenomenal. It looked ridiculous, but I put it to 6 feet. It just rolled off the front of the green because I’ve struck it too good. Now guys, we mentioned that you want a recount. Yes, definitely. Go on. So, show us what what what would you change? Ram. Yeah. I I’m guilty of sort of putting that in at number four just because of the brand name. Yeah. I’ve not I’ve not tested Ram clubs for 10 years and I’ve now put that at number three because you hit a bad one with the links. No, it’s not. Absolutely not. I think even just like I mean links I I don’t know the price point of these golf clubs. I mean, they both look fantastic though. Very similar. They’re both very similar. But I just fractionally prefer the profile of that one. Yeah, I think it does look really, really good, actually. But the links for me, I think the links feel a touch softer. That’s why I had them in there after testing them at length. But guys, if you enjoyed that, smash that subscribe button below. Lots more fantastic videos to come in 2026 and beyond. Thank you so much for your time once again. If you want to check out Gaz’s channel, what we reviewing today, Gaz? Uh, we’re going to be testing the most forgiving golf club in golf. That sounds a lot better than hand warmers. See you there.

  1. Another solid video James, but man limiting it to just 5 brands is killing me lol.
    Hogan
    Sub 70
    Maltby
    New Level

    Just as a recommendation, it would be nice to see you break this up into categories and put out a few other videos:
    * Blade / Muscle back
    * Cavity / Tour cavity
    * Cavity / game improvement / distance
    Then I think you can more "properly" give the people a best-of series

    Keep up the good work
    👍👍

  2. Excellent vid as per James 👌🏻love the content on DTC 🙌🏻 would it be possible you could do one on Haywood CB's and MB's? Keep up the great work 🤜🏻👏🏻🏌🏻‍♂️ p.s. cmon Lando 🏎️

  3. People forget Tom Watson won majors with Ram, Fred Couples and Ernie Els played Lynx! I have Lynx forged MB tour blades KBS shafts Lamkin grips £499 and fitted! My Orka RS10CB’s KBS shafts, Lamkin corded grips and under a grand! Fitted! Forged things of beauty!

  4. Great to see some of the great old iconic brands making a comeback !
    Ram = Tom Watson
    Lynx = Fred Couples ….. remember the Lynx Boom Boom Driver.

  5. Sorry to say, but Takomo weren't the first to do it. Perhaps the first to take a club that they bought from a factory and market the ever loving shite out of it.. but NOT the first DTC brand. Maltby has been in business since the early 80's. They R&D every model in their lineup and they offer more models for every level than any brand, including the big boys. Every club on this list is just a factory catalog head with a brand logo stamped on.

    It's a shame JR won't even sniff a Maltby club because they don't play the flash marketing hype game.

  6. Hi James, while not quite a 2025 release, I’d love to know where you would put the new Eleven TourToise irons in this ranking? You have given them good reviews in your preview videos, but do they hold their own up against Takomo and Vice?

  7. I have a number of iron sets, but the ones I keep going back to are the Takomo 301cb. They aren’t the longest irons I have, but I just enjoy playing with them. They have a great feel to them. I have KBS Tour Lite stiff in them, and I de-lofted them by 2 degrees and 1 degree upright. I’d put them up against any Mizuno as far as softness goes. At $600 a set, they are really hard to beat.

  8. The issue I have with DTC is not being able to demo Thames first with your specs. As you know, X* upright or flat differs between manufactures and once you order custom, there is no return option. I guess I am stuck with $1,000+ clubs. 😉

  9. I hope in about 2-3 years, the eleven golf HB irons are available for us lefties! Big forgiving head with minimal offset! What I’ve always wanted!

  10. Still just clipping along fine with my 101T's. Bought them based on your reviews from several years ago now and have not been disappointed. Glad to see them still on top.

  11. I just went with the Takomo 101 irons to replace my old Mizuno JPX 900 forged. I can't see spending 💰 on a name when the DTC brands are just as good.

  12. That’s the biggest problem with DTC products is not being able to get fit for the clubs and I’m 6’6” so my clubs have to be longer than standard and more upright than standard also, and because there is no standards in golf DTC brands are off the table for me unfortunately

  13. Come on James.
    You shouldn’t be putting in your Takomo as with they will probably be twice the price with this shafts plus fitting cost and equivalent price to some of the bigger names.
    And not a 2025 iron head!!!

  14. Great selection. As mentioned by others would love you to try Maltby from golfworks. Very customisable, if you have the skills you can build your own clubs but they also sell in limited pre built sets or custom your shafts all at great prices. I’m looking closely at the TS3’s

  15. James- really like the look of the RAM could you give me the actual name of these irons cheers- great video

  16. Hi James, sometimes I forget what year we are in, could you maybe remind me in some of your videos.😁 Enjoyed the video👍

  17. Thanks for all your videos, just amazing! Did you ever tested the Haywood-Irons? They're so fantastic! And they have custom grip options! 🙂
